beam laser spa, 2.

remember these miracle workers? well i returned to beam laser spa last week for my second in the series of treatments to eradicate my underarm hair. i've already been super-impressed with my results after just one treatment -- the rate of growth, amount of hair, and coarseness of the hair have already decreased dramatically! and now, 10 days after my second treatment, only minor stubble has come in. to get beamed visit beamlaserspa.com or call 212.245.2577.

the fairytale of beam laser spa.

once upon a time two beautiful and smart sisters decided to open a laser hair removal spa. they chose a magical and convenient location on the west side of the enchanted isle of manhattan (1841 broadway, at columbus circle), and chose the name beam laser spa.

one day they received a visit from a beauty blogger named marina. marina loved their comfortable space, personalized service, and the sisters' sweet and knowledgeable demeanor. this being marina's first experience with laser hair removal she felt fear that she did not have copious underarm hair for them to remove, just mere stubble. but she soon learned that laser can be done as long as there is a root of hair under the skin (quite different from waxing), so she had a successful treatment indeed! the laser itself made marina feel just the mildest sting (nothing like the pangs of waxing!). and in nearly no time at all, the treatment was done, leaving our heroine with a 15 - 20% reduction in underarm hair (6-8 treatments are recommended for permanent removal).

visit beam laser spa, the fairy princesses of hair removal, on the web at www.beamlaserspa.com or call them at 212.245.2577.

facial at georgette klinger: a mixed review

before heading off to the glamorous jersey shore this weekend, i decided that my tired skin needed a facial! spaweek indicated a july special ($100 facial for $85) at georgette klinger, so i booked with them. from the start, i was a bit concerned, as the receptionist tried to tell me they do not participate in spa week, then put me on hold, and told me to bring a print out of the spa week email. however, once i arrived for my treatment i was pleasantly surprised by the spa's huge space on madison ave btwn 52nd and 53rd.

the facial:
the facial itself was amazing! it was a 9 step treatment that left my skin looking incredible. it lasted an hour and a half and was definitely worth $85. the extractions were thorough and the facialist followed them with a high frequency treatment, which i had never had before. the device used looked like a vibrator and felt like mini electrical shocks, but she said it was good for treating areas with recurring breakouts, and so far her results seem to be better than my dermatologist's. these fantastic treatments were slightly marred by the hard sell that ran throughout the facial. she asked me three times if i wanted to upgrade to a more expensive facial and pushed tons of products. however, the results are so flawless, i don't know if i care about the pushy tactics.

it would've been a 5, if they didn't push so hard...

oh yeah, nyc restaurant week begins on monday!

if you live in nyc or plan to visit in the next couple weeks, then you should be booking yourself a reservation for restaurant week. restaurant week includes prix-fixe (how french!) meals at lots of delicious and/or expensive restaurants around the city. lunch is set at $24.07 and dinner is a flat $35.
restaurant week(s) runs from july 16-20 and july 23-27 (mon-fri only).
the only problem with restaurant week is that the prix-fixe menus often have a limited (though yummy) selection. check out the participating restaurants and make reservations here.
on the whole i give it: but i'm easy...

ps- i have reservations at atlantic grill (lunch), calle ocho (dinner), and sushi samba (lunch).

landing stripped.

with this change in weather its time to start thinking about what bikini season holds in store for us. i have tried several nyc spas known for their amazing brazilian waxes. my favorite is shobha. a friend recommended it and i haven't used another since. shobha is mainly a threading salon but their brazilian is thorough and neat (fact not for the shy: in order to get any tiny hairs they thread after the wax). the next day i am always free of any irritation. costs around $50 for a full brazilian.

j sisters , which many celebs frequent, gets a lot of press but i just did not think there was anything exceptional about the wax, definitely nothing that would make it worth the cost and their largely unfriendly staff. costs over $70 for a full brazilian.

another place i would recommend, though not as highly as shobha, is j'adore day spa (whose website is impossible to find, but their contact info can be found here. they have a interesting technique which involves "lamaze" breathing to help with the pain. which is fun, and their wax is super cheap. but for whatever reason i don't think the wax lasted as long, within a week i started to see a bit of regrowth. costs around $30 for the full, so its still worth it.

now you can get bikini-baring ready, beauties!
