steal chanel's hottest summer polish look now!

earlier this week this image was released, showing chanel's summer 2008 polish collection, which will be available online in july, at chanel.com.

pretty gorgeous, huh? judging by the reactions to these polishes on various blogs, LA sunset (top right - a sunny yellow-orange) is the obvious front-runner of the collection (the barack obama of the chanel summer line, if you will).

and since bright orange is the hottest summer trend in polish, you have the option to steal chanel's look (for way less) right now! mattese neon sunburst is my current favorite thing, and, it's $4. but, it seems to only be at ricky's nyc and not available online. tsk, tsk!

however, expect this to be the first of many posts on how to snag all the coveted bright and neon summer nail looks. so stay tuned to mlm, ya hear?

dashing diva spring pedi: full review.

as promised, i bring you the full review of my dashing diva spring pedicure. and believe it or not, my pedicure looks just as good as the day i got it (9 days ago!). it didn't chip a millimeter on my travels. this may be a fluke, but i'm quite pleased with the results. the spring roses and lemon "aid" pedicure doesn't come cheap - $65, but it's not the sort of pedicure you would get every week. this is a once-a-season, two hour, treat. with the following steps:

yup, pretty intensive. and ultimately? totally worth it. before my jellybath (aka the best sensation ever) and french lilac foot masque i was embarrassed to start rocking my cute summer sandals because my heels seemed to have formed a crust no amount of at-home exfoliation was resolving. now? it's all compliments on these tootsies.

to hit up the upper east side dashing diva where i was given the divine treatment head over to 2nd ave between 70th and 71st, and to be sure they can fit you in call ahead at 212.570.0770.

california - here we come!

hi beauties!

i'm finally going on vacation (not just faux-cation). tomorrow morning i'm leaving (very early) for a 6-day stay in san francisco! while i'm there i hope to see the sites, eat tons of food, catch up with friends, and hopefully meet a few of the sf-based beauty bloggers. i have a few posts set up for you while i'm gone, but you may not be hearing from me as much as you've grown accustomed to this week.

a few quick notes:

  • don't forget to enter the mlm/broadway nude french deceptions giveaway! also: please note the giveaway is for the finger nails, not toenails.
  • i got the best pedicure of my life this afternoon at the upper east side dashing diva (my favorite of all the dashing divas). i've raved about this nail salon chain before (read about that here), but their spring roses and lemon-aid pedicure takes it to a new level. plus, they were featuring neon coral nail polish that goes right along with my new neon trend (expect a full review of the pedi when i return, we'll see how it holds up in sf!)
  • it's never to early to start planning for mother's day (after all, she spent 9 months planning your arrival!). philosophy now helps you create a site where can share memories, pictures and advice your momma gave you. bonus!: there's a chance you'll win a $1200 shopping spree at philosophy.com. check out yourmomphilosophy.com.

ps - packing is the hardest thing ever. the only thing in my bag right now is the lisa hoffman 24 hour skincare set and her fantastic little fragrance vials (so, of course, expect a full review of these travel goodies when i get back).

kiss my nails and win some for yourself! (contest).

right now i have little tortoise feet. to be fair, my french pedicure from kiss nails is much cuter than this tortoise's au natural look. but having fake toe nails makes me feel like my toenails are claws.

however, with wedding season coming up these are perfect for giving your feet a finished look at home. particularly if your actual toenails look weathered or even if you are missing one! just pop these on and get ready to receive compliments.

kiss nails is dedicated to making the best faux nails for non-professional use, and i have to say these nails are far superior to the at-home nail kits i used 10 years ago. but applying them still brought back some memories and gave me a manic little girl glee.

which is why i'm giving 10! fingernail kits away to my readers in nude french deceptions (from broadway nails, their sister company. see picture at left). all you have to do is tell me where you will wear them! send your answer to makeuplovesmecontests[at]gmail[cot]com. all answers must be received by next monday (04/21/08) at 10 PM EST. the winners will be announced the following tuesday. enjoy, beauties!

i've got the greys.

grey nail polish is the unexpected trend of spring '08. so unexpected that most polish lines did not even include a grey in their spring collection. in fact, after some research, i've found that grey polishes are incredibly hard to come by - most lines don't even have one in their full collection.

but fear not, you do have some options. omniscient essie included two greys in their spring line (great expectations and body language) and they have a tinged white (marshmallow) in their main line. my painting skill are not great, but see all three here:

diy: if you are the creative type and have a black and a white polish handy you can even make your own grey polish by mixing them together (add the black slowly). that's what the clever girl over at cab drivers tell me i'm pretty did. see her handy work here.

sally hansen nail color pen.

about me: i like pens.

i have a tide to go pen. i recently got an antibacterial pen. and on wednesday i received my very first sally hansen color quick fast dry nail color pen. i ripped it open and got to work. it could not have been easier to use.

the fact of the matter is people have a lot of experience using pens, so we find them easier to use than wipes or paintbrushes. plus, fast drying means less of a chance of smudging.

it currently comes in 8 shades, but i think if we all get behind it in the future all nail polish can come in this form. check it out.

mlm faux-cation 2008 finale! (dashing diva)

to bring my faux-cation week to a close amber and i headed to the 3rd avenue dashing diva, the most pink-tastic of nail salons.
dashing diva is one of my favorite places to get my nails done, mostly because of the fun atmosphere. it has a very social ambiance. on thursday and friday evenings they serve cosmos in the signature, pink pedicure lounge.

another thing that sets this nail salon apart from the masses is the high level of attention payed to sanitation. they never reuse a nail file and sterilize all tools between uses. sure, you can get a pedicure for cheaper, but you can also end up with foot fungus, which i just cannot condone.

i had my nails enrobed in dark tempest (see above), which is from dashing diva's own nail polish line.

dashing diva have seven u.s. locations, five of which are in nyc (4 in manhattan and one in brooklyn). find one near you at dashingdiva.com and start treating yourself to fun, relaxing and sanitary pedicures!

join the essie cult.

i use the phrase "cult following" sparsely because it has such a magical air about it i want to make sure to apply it only when appropriate.

but essie's mademoiselle (left side of image) definitely has that magic. it has been featured in countless blogs and magazines as the perfect understated polish. this shade finishes off your look without drawing much attention to itself, helping create an air of being effortlessly polished. according to nadine haobsh, in her book beauty confidential, it's the color beauty editors swear by.

a second polish women can't get enough of is essie's wicked (middle of image). since the end of summer 2007 wicked has been buzzed about by nail polish fiends and everyday ladies at la office alike. wicked is a dark shade warmed with a blood red that makes your nails the eye-catching envy of all.

i predict the newest cult essie polish will be showstopper (right side of image). this to-die-for shade is a pink-rich red with a good amount of shimmer. it's was a perfect winter color that will transition well into spring because of it's pink-itude and shimmer (which will be big on eyes and nails this spring). i say, get yours now.

all essie polishes available at essieshop.com for $8 apiece.

valentine's day nail picks.

something about having my nails freshly painted makes me feel so, well, polished (i know, even i'm groaning over that one). i happen to prefer classic pinks and reds for nails. this guide to pinks and reds should be your rule of thumb for valentine's day into spring 2008 (some of the colors i'm featuring are for spring 2008 and are not yet available).

my rose-hued valentine nail picks (from left to right):

jessica cosmetics jessana polish in girlie girl, $4
jessica cosmetics polish in pharoah, $6.50 (part of the spring 2008 collection, "walk like an egyptian", not yet available on their website)
lippmann collection in whatever lola wants (color created with kelly ripa), $15

my cherry-hued picks (from left to right):

lippmann collection in since i fell for you (part of their v-day collection), $15
jessica cosmetics polish in great sphinx (part of the spring 2008 collection, "walk like an egyptian", not yet available on their website), $6.50
lippmann collection in since i fell for you (part of their v-day collection), $15

all lippmann polishes are available on their website, at neiman marcus and nordstrom.
jessica cosmetics can be purchased on their website and at various salons and spas across the country. i am so excited to see the rest of the nail polishes in jessica's "walk like an egyptian" line!

makeup lesson: crackled nails.

MAC cosmetics' antiquitease collection features two nail polishes that can be layered to create a crackled or marbleized look. after reading advice from beauty and fashion tech and temptalia, i've recreated the look here.

1. prepare nails my filing them in to a slightly rounded shape. it looks good on slightly longer nails, but it works on shorter nails too.

2. coat nails with two layers of mac's vestral white nail polish. this is a standard white polish with a cream finish. allow nails to dry thoroughly before moving on to the next step.

3. cover each nail individually with a single coat of mac's gold veneer nail polish. this is an antique gold with a frost finish. after coating each nail, press small-bubbled bubble wrap into the nail before it drys.

4. let nails dry and set them with a clear top coat.

i'm interested in seeing how this would work with other colors. try it out, beauties!
