hourglass cosmetics.

being introduced to a new makeup line brings me true joy and my latest discovery is hourglass cosmetics.

i'm mega-crushing on this eye compact ($75). i might have to have it just so i can stop admiring it from afar. i have tried the extreme sheen shine lip gloss ($28) - and it is exactly how it sounds - shiiiiiiiiiny (and cake-scented).

sex & the city movie: carrie's makeup secrets.

sarah jessica parker's makeup artist - judy chin - is ready to spill some of the beauty secrets used for the hotly anticipated film sex & the city movie. for sjp, judy chin says there was no one look for this movie (since the girl gets changed so damn much!), but that:

"one thing that I always wanted to be present for her was a natural beauty that didn't look like makeup. I tried to keep her eyes the focus by creating a strong, yet natural, lashline and I always framed her eyes with beautiful lashes. A healthy rosy flush to her cheeks, a soft mouth and clean healthy skin that had a natural glow and shine to it."

the MAC products used on SJP: powerpoint eye pencil in engraved, blot powder, paint pots, fluidline and mascara X.

up next: kim catrell's makeup artist shares the inspiration for her look in the film...

eye candy, by linda mason.

where has this book been all my life?! it seems so sad that we are only able to begin our love affair now.

makeup artist linda mason nails the essentials of colorful and dramatic eye makeup looks in her newest book, eye candy. it is a must-have for anyone who loves dramatic (eye) makeup (which i would think is most people who read mlm!).

i have bags of bright eyeshadow shades and all sorts of ideas floating in my mind, but sometimes the execution of these looks may leave something to be desired. that's where eye candy/linda mason steps in. this book breaks it down, so when you want to rock bold color on your night out, you will know how to look elegantly dramatic instead of hot (tranny?) mess.

but my favorite thing about it is that it shows you how to create a few classic starlet looks - like bridget bardot and audrey hepburn. i've rocked the bridget bardot for the last few days and i look so sultry and siren-ic! i wish i could tell you how to do it, but alas, it's not my secret to share. eye candy is available on amazon.com for $10.17 right now (bargain!).

givenchy summer escapade '08.

some makeup is so carefully crafted that it looks like art. and givenchy has that art down to a science. their summer escapade 2008 collection, makes me simultaneously desperate for summer so that i can justify diving into these palettes everyday and dreading how summer will lead to the destruction of their artful beauty via my playing with them.

just looking at this collection makes me escape to a world of shimmers and bronze.
the collection (and my thoughts):

prisme again! eyes in 10 summer escapade - $49.50
*four shades of iridescent magic*

prismissime mat & glow in 71 natural and 72 sunny - $53
*sun-kissed bliss in a mix and match, matte and shimmer, format*

tan to go in 01 sandy tan and 02 amber tan - $45
*spray paint your way to a safe tan*

pop gloss crystal in tahiti coral and ibiza pink - $23.50
*true, shiny summer glosses*

glitter to go fresh'n shine body gel - $35
*10 singlets of body shimmer, filled with pink and gold tones to attract the eye and erase imperfections*

available at sephora and givenchy.com (though the summer collection is not yet listed on their site).

loving my therapy.

you may not realize it yet, but you need therapy (systems).

their spring/summer 08 collection is launching on april 1st (tuesday)!), but i got a little sneak preview of the new shades to share with you.

at first glance, i was a bit nonplussed by these little silver compacts. but, as i tirelessly try everything for you beauties, i dove in. and even though they may not look like much, i now fully understand why therapy systems has a cult following amongst beauty editors. as an added bonus, the mediterranean-inspired names given to the colors in this collection bring me right back to my trip to beautiful italy trip last spring.

there are three products in this colletion that i loooove, but if you only get one, please make it mykonos eyeshadow (top picture). this is the best color product i've tried of late - a true find. the press release describes it as "a soft metallic eye shadow with specs of gold shimmer and comes in a portable silver compact with mirror", and i don't think i can explain it better. oh, and its $19.

the other two darlings of this collection are the gel blushes - in both portofino (rose, middle picture) and santorini (coral, bottom picture). gel combines the best of a liquid and powder blush to give most natural glow and these two colors are just angelic - $24.

the collection also includes tequila sunrise powder blush ($30), capri lipstick ($20), and naples lipstick ($20). but you still have a couple days to wait - the products aren't up yet at therapysystems.com. but on april 1st they will be available on the website, at private edition, at the cosmetic market and at the therapy systems store in nashville or at 1-800-733-8606.

red carpet ready for the oscars: beauty news.

i've been getting so many emails about the oscars you would think i was getting an award (i so am not). after finally sorting it all out, i bring you the highlights of oscar red carpet beauty prep and news.

heidi klum seems to be the busiest bee in the business this week. yesterday she and victoria's secret makeup artist linda hay teamed up to talk about the best kept style and beauty secrets in hollywood. she has also worked with victoria's secret to create a diamond pendant gift for the best actress nominees and is working with diet coke as the spokeswoman for the red dress campaign to raise heart disease awareness amongst women.

image: linda hay working on heidi klum

i was lucky enough to submit a question to linda hay for my readers, and here it is:

what steps are taken so that red carpet makeup stays intact for several hours?

her response:
start with an oil-free moisturizer so you don't get too shiny as the night wears on. i like the sheer foundations and concealers from very sexy makeup, which don't cake and flake, and allow skin to breathe. to make your eye makeup last, make sure you apply liner and shadow after you've prepared the eye with a light touch of concealer and powder so the color will set and adhere longer. when you're at the event, make sure to check your makeup every hour. if you have limited room in your evening bag, take beauty rush blotting sheets, a powder compact with mirror, a small blush brush to apply powder, and your very sexy lip gloss or lipstick of choice so you're armed with the necessities to keep your makeup sexy and glamorous all night long.

l'oreal has created a special limited edition version of their infalliable never fail lipcolour in red carpet red to commemorate the evening. available only in february 2008, at lorealparis.com and l'oreal boutiques, $11.99.

in the paradoxical topic of men's beauty (kidding), emerging star and man who rivals the boyfriend in charm, john krasinski (jim from the office) is a devotee of zirh men's skincare.

and who's getting ready for the big night where:
linda evangelista and mark wahlberg both have appointments at ole henriksen for facials. and finally, fekkai products and stylists will be used to prep marion cotillard and jen garner.

three custom color specialists color studio.

while you were busy sleeping in on president's day, i was researching the next big thing for you. i went to three custom color specialists' manhattan's color studio to learn more about what makes them different from other makeup companies. well, it turns out quite a lot.

at the essence of all their products and services seems to be their deep commitment to color as a science. chad, one of the company's three co-owners, kindly took the time to explain their offerings to me.

chad really is some sort of color magician. he explained how all of the colors in the company's ready-to-wear line are separated into warm and cool. he declared me a "warm" tone and went on to say that their apple honey lip gloss wand would look perfect on me. up until then he seemed like a very knowledgeable guy, but this color on me (see swatch at left)?! but, i took the color home with me, not wanting to be rude, and it turns out, this color, on me, is a great thing.

but, i think the best thing about three custom color is their response to what is probably the biggest complaint i hear about makeup: a beloved product has been discontinued, what's a girl to do?
three custom color specialists' response to this is ingenious. they do not discontinue any colors in their ready-to-wear line, for starters, and better yet, if you send them the tiniest sample of any discontinued product (minus liquid foundation and nail polish) they can match the color for you and custom blend a new one. even if you don't have a sample, give them a call because they have thousands of discontinued color formulas on file. they have been making lipsticks for the always flawless angelina jolie ever since her favorite guerlain shade was discontinued.

also: is this palette of theirs not the most brilliant idea in the world?! it's a century in red lip palette. each color represents a different decade between 1900-2000 and the corresponding red that was popular during this time. i love the high level of historical and cultural knowledge at three custom blend specialists. every piece has a complex story behind it, but this one is my favorite.

experience three custom color specialists yourself by visiting their website and if you like, you can make an appointment to go their studio for a consultation.

nyc socialite?

one of the best things about fashion week is that many of my beauty blogger friends from all over the country travel to nyc and we get to catch up (on products).

in addition to the runway shows and backstage interviews there have been back-to-back social events. total beauty and aveda sponsored a dinner for the total beauty i-correspondents friday night at KOI (however, i did not take any pictures there because i looked like a drowned rat from the crazy downpour that evening).

before heading over to MAC's indochine event erika, julia, daneen, amber and i attended the launch event for melissa walker's new book violet by design and christopher kane's juicy tubes at the lancome boutique. while there i also had the fabulous leandro bare do my makeup (hence my much improved look in the above picture). if you ever at the nyc lancome boutique - please have him do your makeup. at indochine i met some new blogging friends - dina, henna, and tamar.

daneen and i posed for a picture with one of mac's key artists, victor c. he attended the dinner after working backstage all day and sweetly entertained dozens of blogger's makeup trick questions.

and finally just this morning md skincare showed off their newest products over breakfast at alice's teacup (above is a picture of connie and i from this event). i have already practically used up the powerful sun protection lip balm sample they gave me!

and somehow i also managed to vote today (yay super tuesday!). and now i'm relaxing with an eggplant parm hero on my couch.

backstage at THREEAsFOUR.

MAC's gordon espinet created the look for this season's THREEAsFOUR runway show, which took place saturday evening. i went backstage and spoke to gordon about the look. he wanted the girls to have a radiant, healthy look - "like they drink milk everyday", but combined with a rock star glam, which he achieved with shocking blue lashes.

their flushed cheeks were achieved with a new rosy mineralized blush. MAC is tweaking the formula based on the runway shows and the finished product should be available to the public in the fall (i will definitely be letting you know when this comes out!).

the amazing blue lashes were painted that color with fluidline in royal wink (a MAC pro color).

the unofficial shoe of fashion week? i saw my friend heather from MAC backstage and we were both wearing seychelle's "with a twist" shoes. i have seriously been wearing them all week because they are so cute and comfortable.

makeup loves me would like to give the biggest thank you ever to total beauty for making me an i-correspondent and helping me obtain backstage access. i could not have brought you this coverage without them!

welcome back, fashion week!

mercedes benz fashion week kicked off in nyc yesterday morning. following tradition, thursday's wwd contained the pantone top 10 color list for fall 2008. blue iris (see the color at left) was #1.

but what i'm most eager to share with you are the runway makeup looks that are being created backstage to go with the trends for fall 2008. last night i went backstage at project runway designer victorya hong's show and spoke with the head makeup artist, lynsey laskowski. lynsey told me that the focus of the show's look would be bright pops of color on the cheek and mouth in a matching shade. she made the colors by mixing several lipsticks then using the same shade for both the cheek and lip. hair was flat, straight and shiny, like a cascade of water.
(by the way, i absolutely fell in love with this model backstage. she was the sweetest girl. i wish i had caught her name, but i wish her the best of luck.)

it's off to a long day at the bryant park tents for me. keep checking back, because as often as possible, i will be updating you on all the latest in makeup innovation as it happens.

vincent longo's c scope.

there is a lot of diversity among the spring 2008 collections. which is fabulous, because there's something for everyone and something to help you express every aspect of your personality.

vincent longo's spring line, c scope, introduces three new, very innovative, products to their line - c scope vibrant eye waterproof mascara ($24), c scope vibrant eye waterproof liner ($18) and c scope lip vinyl ($24).

both the mascara and the liner (which is liquid) come in 7 colors - black, red, white, yellow, blue, green, and brown. i'm excited to try the liner, since i love liquid liner.

the lip vinyls come in 5 varieties - ranging from red, to pink, to brown.

concurrently, longo is also releasing the illumina/concealer duo pencils ($32.50) - double-ended pencils where one side is concealer and the other is a highlighter. i think this is genius! the illumina/concealer will be available in 6 colors - light, medium, dark, amber, caramel and sienna.

vincent longo products are available at vincentlongo.com, beauty.com, ulta.com, victoriassecret.com and sephora.

shu uemura's rebirth collection.

yuck! i do not like this makeup look created for shu uemura's spring 2008 rebirth collection.

the collection itself contains some beautiful pressed eyeshadows and blushes along with some soft pink lipsticks and nail enamels. most notably, it features two tri-color eye pencils, which are cream liners that have 3 different colors stacked in one applicator so you can switch between different colors. i have never seen anything like this in makeup before! see the whole collection here.

i love l.u.c.i.!

gucci westman's final collection for lancome, l.u.c.i. which stands for luminous colorless color intelligence (yeah, i don't understand what the "u" is about either), is currently available on the lancome site.
i'm most intrigued by the ombres glacée cooling gel illuminator for eye and face, available in chameleon (a soft candy pink) and morning pearl (a cooler-toned pink). the products all have an iridescent sheen, reminiscent of the inner side of a seashell. in fact, the whole line makes me think of a day at the beach, except for the futuristic packaging. see it all here.
