my first visit to shane at the chris chase salon was fantastic (read about it here), but after my second visit, shane has made his way into my inner circle of trust!
last week i visited him for a color and bang trim, during a particularly whimsical mood . rather than bringing a zillion pictures and random words i've thought of to describe how i wanted my hair to look (past words like this have included "mermaid hair" and "wispy but not hipster-y"), i pretty much let him do whatever he wanted.
this is a dangerous test to see if you truly can trust your hairdresser and is not recommended for the faint of heart. however, i left with the perfect shade of copper brown that i've been trying to achieve for years, and with the cutest side-bang fringe (without looking like i live in williamsburg). and to top it off, the best blow-out of my life (yes, i am aware of how that sounds). it was so good that i did not wash my hair the next AM, which is something i just simply always do.
interested in seeing shane's work for yourself? find out more at chrischasesalon.com, or book him up at 212.206.7991.

flat irons are essential for creating the current sleek haired tress trends (think: kim kardashian's look). but, i am one of the few women i know that is cursed/blessed with stick straight hair. thus, i crave a curling iron while my all my friends are busy flattening away.
whether your hair is fat or flat, misikko, has you covered. their site offers an enormous variety of ceramic flat irons, as well as a good selection of curling irons, and blow dryers. i got a t3 twirl tourmaline from misikko and could not be more pleased with the product and their service. i received up-to-date payment and shipping info emails from them and the product arrived in under two days.
t3 is already my favorite line for hair tools, because of their fantastic blow dryer (see here for that review), but now that i have my twirl, i love them extra. best thing about it? the t3 twirl tourmaline curls hair significantly faster than the curling iron you used in 1988. another modern feature? it has an adjustable heat dial that can range from 140-410 degrees. so if you want runway level volume, go hot (or go home), and if you don't want to fry your hair, the twirl says that's your prerogative.
so, check out misikko.com, the guru of heated hair tools, if you're in the market for such things.

i know, i know, i've mentioned it before (and quite a bit lately), but nutty and earthy are the perfect scents for summer! i'm nutty for nutty (groan all you want).
it's amazing how much one's perception of what is an appealing fragrance changes with the seasons. after trying some of his other products, i was looking forward to philip b's white truffle moisturizing shampoo like a kid looks forward to a snow day. well, this isn't the godiva truffle, this is the funky italian mushroom sort of truffle and it's deeply earthy scent was too much for me in the winter months. but now? re-fresh-ing! and uber restorative for the hair.
hit it up at philipb.com or spaceNK apothecary to get yours, $54.

eco-friendly beauty is coming out of the woodwork for april aka "earth month". mlm has your guide for where you can get your green on.

brushes and tools: ecotools makes a full line of makeup brushes with bamboo handles and cruelty-free bristles. they also have wide array of shower accessories (loofahs and sponges) made from natural materials. green bonus? their prices are very wallet friendly. $2.99-7.99 per brush.
hair: tela beauty organics by philip pelusi, is a salon-quality line that follows the certified organic fold. this line is just being released, i believe next week. i got a little preview of the shampoo and conditioner and i have been using them for about a week. i'm quite pleased, my hair has been drying naturally and still looking styled. $50 a piece at barney's (in stores and online) and at the tela design studio in the meatpacking district (which, from what i hear, is a heavenly place to visit. the salon, not the meatpacking district.).

skincare: pangea organics challenges the notion that organic skincare isn't hip. they offer sophisticated scents like egyptian fennel with rosemary & mint cream. their earth-friendly packaging is sleek, chic, and the outer part can be planted in the earth to grow into an organic plant such as sweet basil or amaranth (i love this idea. i wish all my packaging turned into plants). prices range, but the aforementioned cream is $31.
burt's bees has a devoted following to natural products. they started out making beeswax products, but they now offer a large and commendable facial care line in simple, earth friendly packaging. their anti-aging serum is $25.
body care: chillessence makes safer, natural soaps, body washes, and lotions. the mediterranean-inspired fragrance of many of their products sounds like the perfect summer accent. $12.99-$25.99 per product.

makeup/color: afterglow cosmetics is a mineral makeup line with high pigment colors. all of their makeup is certified organic. i've used their loose bronzer; it brings the glow. prices vary by product but bronzer is $18.
now that you have the 411, go green, beauties!

remember how i told you i was getting a cut/color? well, guess what?

i love it! lately i've been experimenting with all sorts of infidelities (fragrance, hairdressers...), and somehow they all seem to be for the better (don't try this at home, kids). i visited shane at the chris chase salon to summer-ify my 'do. i'm so in love. my hair is perfect. darker, but still very warm and shorter, but still very feminine. shane chose a very golden dark brown, which coupled with my red tones underneath, makes for a super rich brown.
oh and on a personal note: i normally don't love seeming male hair dressers, but shane was fantastic. it was very easy for me to talk to him and he seemed to understand what i was going for, hair-wise, immediately.

until recently i didn't obsess over my hair or finding the most fantastic hair products, but it's true that having beautiful hair frames your face, which in turn shows off your makeup! and in that spirit, i have embraced haircare (more in this vein tomorrow. spoiler: i'm getting a cut and color - it's gonna be may-ja).
my most recent shampoo and conditioner mega-crush is new york streets clean ($15) and condition ($17). this pair is perfect for summer in nyc because:
a. the unusual, nutty scent will be refreshing in the extreme heat, and b. the formula was built to repair hair in the insane nyc humidity.
and since i've taken to pretending summer is here, i'm using mine daily, meaning i will probably have to buy another set before the actual summer begins.
hint: they also have some fantastic shine and volumizing products.
all products are color safe, provide UV protection, and come in edgy packaging adorned with real new yorkers. what more do you want? see the line here.

ok, so it wasn't so much a date, as a total beauty organized informal interview, but it was beyond fabulous. in the cut-throat world of fashion and beauty, ted gibson is the most genuine and good-hearted person and it shines through in everything he says and does.
me and the girls sat down with ted at his salon and enjoyed prosecco and chocolate-covered strawberries. ted dished about the upcoming product releases from his eponymous product line, his childhood in texas, and his hands-on mentorship of the stylists in the salon. he is working on some sort of terrific new dry shampoo that i'm already all excited for. see the current offerings in his beautifully packaged and heavenly-scented product line here.
picture shows: anne, ted gibson, erika, risi-leanne, amber and me.

i have been wondering about how to create sexy waves since seeing miss pettigrew lives for a day (that delysia is spicy!). and, as luck would have it, a lingerie show at LA fashion week featured this siren-esque style.
VO5 and celebrity stylist erin anderson teamed up to create this look with the following steps/products:
to get this short tousled look, ideal for mid-length hair, start with clean hair. to create the wavy texture, apply extreme style by VO5 curvaceous curls and tousle dry with a diffuser. once dry, twirl (don’t wind) 2-inch thick strands of hair around a curling iron in different directions. finish with extreme style by VO5 texturizing gum to provide a flexible, texturized hold.
i might give this a try this weekend.

i confess, i was a little nervous to try the newest hair care line from herbal essences, long term relationship.
was i ready to make that kind of commitment? and aside from that, i haven't always been the biggest fan of herbal essences. but this line is focused on promoting the health of long hair ,which is something i'm so into that i had to give it a try. from the start i knew this experience would be different. the products smell great (a silky raspberry scent) and doesn't have the thick, concentrated consistency i previously associated with herbal essences products.
beyond that, i have only been using the shampoo and conditioner for a little over two weeks and i have already gotten a couple compliments about the length/lush-ness of my hair! this may be a coincidence related to the timing of my most recent haircut, but at about $2.99 a bottle, the other aspects that i enjoy about these products make it beyond worth it.
long term relationship happens to be a three step process, including a leave-in split-end protector after the shampoo and conditioner, but that i have not yet integrated into my routine (extra steps can be so bothersome).

lately, i'm all about winning duos. t3's bespoke labs featherweight hair dryer and plump heat seeking liquid hair plumper are definitely a hot couple.
you have heard it before, every girl in her mid-20s needs to invest in a high quality hair dryer because having great hair is the cornerstone of a finished look. i wasn't so sure i believed in this mantra in the past, but the t3 featherweight has changed my life in a significant way: it has made into someone who blow dries her hair, as opposed to someone who leaves the house in full makeup with wet hair.
the main reason i've changed my ways is because the t3 featherweight makes it so easy. it is much faster than an ordinary hair dryer (60% faster, to be scientific). i have long hair and i don't want to be standing around with some noisy machine for 15 minutes, but with this dryer i get it done in under 5 (i let it dry naturally for about 20 min beforehand). another factor i enjoy is that it really is featherweight, or at least much lighter than my old dryer.
i almost always combine it with the t3 plump heat seeking liquid hair plumper, which has a clean and pleasant smell, i spray it all over before drying. the spray is totally devoid of stiffness (very good thing!) and i think my hair has a little extra spring going on!
the featherweight will set you back $200, but you will love it for years to come, and the plumper is $38. both are available at t3micro.com and sephora.

im in a real catch 22 with red flower, the more products i try of theirs, the more i want.
as a rule, i do not like "water" or "ocean" scents. the smell always seems forced and artificial. but, i seem to have found an exception in red flower's ocean line. instead of smelling like some remix on your college trip to cancun, it's more of a cool, rocky, new england ocean, filled with seaweed and periwinkles.
i have tried red flower ocean as a shampoo, conditioner and candle. as of this morning i am saving what is left of my shampoo and conditioner to use during the summer at fire island. this captivating scent is also available as a body wash and moisturizing lotion.
see the all their offerings at redflower.com

i hope you like superlatives, because this post is gonna be full of them.
i had the most amazing morning at henri bendel's beauty breakfast. ted gibson was there (in. the. flesh.), and one of his assistants, devin gave me the most fantastic blow-out of my life (and yes, it was just as sexy as that sentence makes it sound). my hair is huge, which i love.
by this point, i think we all know how picky i am about fragrance, but i tried two. one by etat libre d'orange, which happens to be the most fascinating french perfumerie. another by isabela capeto, the chicest brazilian designer. both stole my heart, so i'm sure you will be hearing more about them in the near future.
i also finally met amber from beauty blogging junkie - and seriously, she looks like serena van der woodsen from gossip girl. would i lie about something like this? i also got to quickly catch up with two of my favorites, erika from makeup bag and julia from all about the pretty. i wish i could show you just how beautiful everyone looked. why don't i ever remember to take pictures?!
and if you can believe it, i have another product release/breakfast event to attend tomorrow morning! so stay tuned for more, hopefully superlative, tales.

i enjoy sunsilk's hairapy mini-sitcoms/commercials quite a bit. and i like to support things i find humorous. so when i found myself both a. out of shampoo and b. at cvs where sunsilk was on sale, it seemed fated that i would try their line.
i selected the thermashine variety, because whenever i can i always go for more shine. while i still like their marketing, the shampoo/conditioner was only ok. first of all, the shampoo was glittery, which i don't really associate with squeaky-clean. second of all, i haven't noticed any extra shine to my hair. my hair is, if anything, duller than before. guess from now on i'll be skipping the hairapy.
