it's the final countdown. there is exactly one week until mother's day (mark your calendars, it's may 11th).
know what that means? you need to go shopping. below, makeup loves me's top 5 mother's day gift ideas.
 1. thierry mugler's angel fragrance heavenly collection - my mom wore ""as her signature scent from the time i was in middle school (when it first came out) up until a few years ago. so this smell definitely says "mom"to me. but beyond that it is a delicious, comforting and empowering fragrance, which makes it perfect for (most) mothers. $85 at department stores.
2. red door spa's mandarin honey manicure/pedicure - this treatment left my feet a bit raw from some overzealous exfoliation, but there are red door spas nationwide and they tend to be a luxurious setting where mom will be treated like a queen. this seasonal mani/pedi is a fun treat to help ease mom into the spa lifestyle. manicure - $42, pedicure - $80.
 3. the sephora sun safety kit - will keep momma safe from those uv rays. this kit contains 11 travel-sized sunscreens from a variety of brands, so she's sure to find a match. major plus: 100% of the net proceeds go to the skin cancer foundation. $25 at sephora and sephora.com.
4. kai body butter - oprah (it was listed as one of her "favorite things") loves it, so you know mom's gonna be all over it. it has a rich texture and a sweet, lily of the valley scent. $55 at bendel's or online at eluxury.com.

5. noodle & boo glowology - noodle & boo started out as a natural product line for babies, but it turned out the mommies were loving these gentle products too! so, the founder then created the glowology line for the baby mommas, including pregnancy and sensitive skin treatments. prices vary by product.

hi beauties!
i'm finally going on vacation (not just faux-cation). tomorrow morning i'm leaving (very early) for a 6-day stay in san francisco! while i'm there i hope to see the sites, eat tons of food, catch up with friends, and hopefully meet a few of the sf-based beauty bloggers. i have a few posts set up for you while i'm gone, but you may not be hearing from me as much as you've grown accustomed to this week.
a few quick notes:
- don't forget to enter the mlm/broadway nude french deceptions giveaway! also: please note the giveaway is for the finger nails, not toenails.
- i got the best pedicure of my life this afternoon at the upper east side dashing diva (my favorite of all the dashing divas). i've raved about this nail salon chain before (read about that here), but their spring roses and lemon-aid pedicure takes it to a new level. plus, they were featuring neon coral nail polish that goes right along with my new neon trend (expect a full review of the pedi when i return, we'll see how it holds up in sf!)
- it's never to early to start planning for mother's day (after all, she spent 9 months planning your arrival!). philosophy now helps you create a site where can share memories, pictures and advice your momma gave you. bonus!: there's a chance you'll win a $1200 shopping spree at philosophy.com. check out yourmomphilosophy.com.
ps - packing is the hardest thing ever. the only thing in my bag right now is the lisa hoffman 24 hour skincare set and her fantastic little fragrance vials (so, of course, expect a full review of these travel goodies when i get back).

lancôme is teaming up with dr. jana klauer, who wrote the book how the rich get thin, to offer new jersey and new york boutique customers customized diet plans. so for you local girls, here's the details:
lancôme I the boutique short hills, nj april 4th at 10:00 am, 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm call 973.258.0790 to book an appointment
lancôme I the boutique upper west side april 5th at 10:00 am, 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm call 212.362.4858 to book an appointment
*A $175 reservation fee is required for all appointments and is fully redeemable towards lancôme product. Limited space is available.* and now for the bonus question i chose to ask dr. klauer for my readers (a question clearly near and dear to my heart): if you were dealing with someone with very little willpower, is there any specific food to avoid or small habit to pick up that would maximize their weight loss? and her response: cravings can and must be dealt with. it might interest you to know that they tend to occur at particular times of the day, unique of each person. so pay attention to your time clock and plan your snack. personally, i can almost set my watch by them, 3pm i must have a snack. the absolute worst thing that you can do during a craving is to have a sugary snack. sugar is rapidly digested, raises blood glucose, causing insulin release which stores glucose in a muscle cell or fat cell. then hunger returns. great snack: a piece of fresh fruit and a piece of cheese. or try a piece of chicken with spicy salsa. crudités with hummus or yogurt is another idea. each of these snacks is a source of protein and complex carbohydrates, which take longer to digest so you are satisfied for a longer time. take home: sugar makes you hungrier, protein is satisfying.

sometimes i'm a bit slow with things, like doing my taxes or scheduling haircuts. my dear friend amber tagged me almost a month ago for a book meme.
how it works: a) pick up the nearest book of 123 pages or more. b) find page 123. c) find the first 5 sentences and read them. d) post the next 3 sentences.
"and angela's been talking about all the people who want to interview you and photograph you." "wait," i say. "are you guys censoring things for me?"
so the book i picked was violet on the runway, the first book by melissa walker. it's the tale of a small town girl turned supermodel. vapid? sure. but, as far as young adult novels go i thought this one was pretty quality.
and i tag...spoiled pretty!

i'm sure many of you have read the ny times article (published on 01/31/08) about beauty blogging by kayleen schaefer. as you have probably guessed most beauty bloggers, particularly the beauty bloggers who participated in that article are not pleased with how ms. schaefer represents us.
while her article calls for more transparency amongst beauty bloggers in regards to receiving "swag", she herself is a beauty editor at a magazine, where swag and ad sales makes the rules about which products can be featured.
do i get free products? absolutely. do i accept lavish gifts from publicists? only in my really good dreams. instead i sacrifice 20+ hours a week, in addition to having a full-time job, to blog as a hobby.
as my girl liane described it, "kayleen schaefer's acid laced piece was nothing short of bait and switch kamikazee journalism."
i think that is all i can handle saying about this for right now. thank you for all your support, beauties.

so somehow i ended up at home this saturday evening watching the miss america pageant on tlc.
apparently there has been a reality series leading up to the pageant for the last of several weeks. the goal of the reality show and the feel at pageant is to modernize the pageant. key phrases that keep being repeated are "finding the next 'it' girl" and "miss america is evolving - it's no longer about stiff hair and clown makeup". they hired a dj and are entertaining the eliminated girls with carbohydrates (which also get mentioned, a mildly painful, every 10 seconds) and that guy from "what not to wear".
however, despite the somewhat forced feel of their "modernization", the idea itself isn't bad. the girls do look much better with movable hair and their whole presentation is enjoyably more runway chic than past years. though the cheesy talent portion isn't helping with the chic vibe.
i like miss washington because she seems the most similar to an actual human. in fact, she's adorable. let's go miss w, become the get "it" girl!

let me just say, it is freezing in nyc right now. i went outside thinking i would go on a shopping voyage to soho, but i didn't get much farther than my mailbox in the lobby. however inside my mailbox i found a beautiful new year's card from my friend ingram who lives in japan.
a few months ago ingram sent me two boxes of q-tips from japan, due to some begging on my end. i became interested in black japanese q-tips after reading a "what's in your makeup bag" feature with dick page, who claims they are an absolute must-have. while i do find them pretty and rather fascinating, i'm not really sure how to use them for my makeup needs. they are somewhat tighter and less soft than their american counterparts. in fact, when i used them to neaten up my liner their less soft texture sorta hurt my eye! if anyone knows what mr. page uses these for, please let me know.

sneaking up on me without warning, somehow this past week was the season finale of my beloved gossip girl (i think this early ending may have something to do with the writer's strike). gossip girl is infectious, perhaps particularly for me, as the show centers around the upper east side and a blog (my life much?).

the girls always look fabulous. after close examination though, i realized they follow just a few easy rules to achieve their fabulosity. here, i enumerate for you, the fashion, beauty, and life lessons of gossip girl:
- while you can spend a million dollars on clothes, you don't have to. these girls use accessories (which can be quite cheap!) to turn a simple black dress into an eye-catching outfit. the main trick is a splash of bright color.
get yourself some bright opaque tights at welovecolors.com. headbands are everywhere, check claire's accessories for a huge assortment that's inexpensive and unique. and, if you are feeling daring, you can try streekers (not to be confused with streaking) temporary vibrant color streaks/highlights for hair, an easy and cheap way to add color at $9.95.
- in terms of the gossip girl makeup, neutrals on eyes and lips with an overall glossy flush never hurt anyone. powder puff beauty has an array of young, sweet, glossy colors at a reasonable prices to help you capture the look. the "you glow girl" palette on the right has four fun, creamy lip and cheek colors for $45.
- and finally, a little authority goes a long way. so whatever you wear, wear it like you own the universe.

i know that i'm starting to look for (or is it panic about?) holiday gifts. if you are too, look no further for the "glam girl who already subscribes to every magazine" on your list. get her beauty confidential by nadine haobsh (buy at amazon). nadine has experience working in the beauty/fashion magazine circuit and is ablogger-extraordinaire (just vist jolie in nyc and you'll see what i mean). anyhow, i have not yet read beauty confidential (hint to those who have this "glam girl" on their list), but nadine supposedly spills all sorts of beauty and industry secrets.
and i was also lucky enough to have her answer one question for my readers! here's my question: As a fellow NYC girl being glamorous here can be very expensive. What are your best tips for cheap and glam living in NYC?
and here's her answer: Glamming it up on the cheap is all about learning where and how to spend your money. You can find some of the best products on the market at the drugstore, such as Olay Regenerist, Cetaphil, Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream SPF 15 (really, anything from Neutrogena!) Max Factor Lash Perfection Mascara, Pantene shampoo and Infusium conditioner. More often than not, I voluntarily choose these products over more expensive offerings sold at places like Bendels and Barneys. A lot of the myth behind prestige products is just that: myth. It’s mostly marketing, packaging and hype. Go drugstore for products, and then spend whatever earmarked beauty money you have left on the best haircut you can afford; it’s with you everyday, and a great cut will last for several months and truly flatter your face shape and hair texture.

traveling makes it hard time to stay pretty. after spending several hours on a plane (and on supershuttle trying to get from the airport back to my apartment), i have some thoughts on the matter:
1. as everyone tells you, stay hydrated - meaning drink lots of water, but also, keep moisturized. i kept my face soft and hydrated by spraying my mineral fusion hydrating mist on it every couple hours. 2. my glamorous stewardess (i'm pretty sure i'm supposed to say flight attendant, but, oh well) looked amazing and added a little festivity to her look by wearing my beloved urban decay's glitter liner in baked, a bronzy gold. i haven't tried this shade yet, but i will now because it looked really terrific on her!
3. stay vitamin-ated! i like to drink at least one tomato juice per 3 hours on the plane in order to do this. it is also a good idea to take some probiotic vitamins to revitalize the body.
if anyone can figure out the flight rules about the liquids, let me know. i always seem to be getting called out for that. xo, beauties!

there are so many things i'm excited for happening in the next couple weeks! thanksgiving is just a few days away and the city is getting more and more holiday-festive. while it is unnerving when decorations and special holiday products arrive before halloween, once the season actually sets in (post-turkey) the winter wonderland theme of shop windows feels so magical.
here's my "fav five" things im looking forward to:
1. buying gifts for everyone on my list. you can bet there will be tons of makeup, fine wine, and delicious treats. i can't say too much more since some people who receive gifts from me are probably reading this!
2. making my wishlist. my list will definitely include some form of my signature scent, stella by stella mccartney.
3. taking a bubble bath. my little nyc apartment doesn't have a full sized bathtub. i've been fantasizing about having a relaxing foamy bath while at my parents house.
4. truffle-making and baking. when im not lusting after beauty products i love to be in the kitchen, especially on a snowy day. last year i made goat cheese truffles, this year im planning to make chili pepper truffles.
5. the release of the film enchanted. fairy tale + nyc? count me in.
