a cheater's guide to a summer body: part 3.

who knew being fit could be as easy as changing your shoes?

two shoe brands claim to help increase your leg and booty tone simply by wearing them (for both walking and just standing). this seems like a pretty cheat-tastic way to get bikini-ready to me.

mbt - stands for masai barefoot technology. these shoes have got to be the ugliest way to get hot. they claim to mimic the way that the masai of kenya walk - that is barefoot on soft ground. the masai do not have the back problems seen in the US and they do have toned legs, hence the idea to design a shoe that helps others walk like them. i haven't tried them, but amber swears by them. but these ugly little hot-booty-makers don't come cheap, around $250 a pair.

fitflop - follows a similar idea. the shoe forces muscles to be more engaged, hence body tone is improved through use. this shoe is mildly cuter (but still not attractive). fitflop only comes in flip flop form, whereas mbt has a sandal and sneaker versions. $49.95 on victoriassecret.com
(a place you are probably starting to realize i "window" shop at quite a bit).

after weighing my cheater's options, i think i'm going to buy the fitflop, i just can't argue with a $200 price difference.

neon nails du jour.

mattese's hot pink, sold exclusively at perfumania, $3.99. it chips after a couple days, but it's less than $4.00, what more do you want from it?

bright idea: while attending the seychelle's fall/holiday 2008 shoe preview (all i can say is: start saving now because these shoes are unreal), i met an awesome nail tech who gave me a great suggestion for re-creating this summer's mega bright nails. use a white shade as your base coat. putting the bright shade on top of the white canvas really makes the color pop (i did not do that here, but will definitely be giving it a try soon).

fashion shows - fall 2008 overview.

during fashion week, when im not backstage, sometimes i'm at the show or presentation! to wrap up my mercedes benz fashion week fall 2008 coverage i bring you a quick summary of the shows i saw.

project runway's victorya hong
in a few words: black and white with touches of purple and neon yellow. very sleek cuts.

thuy new york
in a few words: inspired. vibrant. jewel toned.
* this was my favorite clothing collection by far.

ohne titel
in a few words: winter in russian. utterly perplexing. overstated brows.

iodice
in a few words: elegant prom. clothes seemed like dressed up versions of jessica mcclintock numbers, while remaining wearable. the hair was styled into heightened updos and makeup was feminine to a tee.

liz mcclean (see image at left)
in a few words: totally unorthodox. rather than a show or presentation mcclean did a photo display of her line. the models in the shoot featured women of all sizes in very natural (covergirl!) makeup.

my lill bag.

and since it's fashion week i've been sharing my (more well thought-out) fashion decisions with you and this bag by 1154 lill studio is one i'd like to share.

it looks deceptively tiny in this picture, but it's actually a sizable shoulder bag that can fit a pair of shoes (i know because it just did). i absolutely love how this bag (the hadley in white birch) combines metallic, pastel and radiant color. most importantly? it's unique without being over-the-top.

i hear that drew barrymore is also a fan of lill bags. i always knew we were on the same wavelength.

backstage at alice temperley.

the charismatic charlotte tilbury used MAC products to create the look for wednesday evening's temperley london show. i spoke with tilbury amongst the chaotic backstage scene.

her inspiration? the 70s woman.
the look? skin was matte and perfected, with silverish highlights on the tips of cheekbones, chin and nose and a little bronzer on the cheek. eyes were the focus. tilbury created an elongated (but not catty) eye with MAC's shadestick in sharkskin. lips were washed out with MAC pro product lip erase.

welcome back, fashion week!

mercedes benz fashion week kicked off in nyc yesterday morning. following tradition, thursday's wwd contained the pantone top 10 color list for fall 2008. blue iris (see the color at left) was #1.

but what i'm most eager to share with you are the runway makeup looks that are being created backstage to go with the trends for fall 2008. last night i went backstage at project runway designer victorya hong's show and spoke with the head makeup artist, lynsey laskowski. lynsey told me that the focus of the show's look would be bright pops of color on the cheek and mouth in a matching shade. she made the colors by mixing several lipsticks then using the same shade for both the cheek and lip. hair was flat, straight and shiny, like a cascade of water.
(by the way, i absolutely fell in love with this model backstage. she was the sweetest girl. i wish i had caught her name, but i wish her the best of luck.)

it's off to a long day at the bryant park tents for me. keep checking back, because as often as possible, i will be updating you on all the latest in makeup innovation as it happens.

you know you love gossip girl, xoxo.

sneaking up on me without warning, somehow this past week was the season finale of my beloved gossip girl (i think this early ending may have something to do with the writer's strike). gossip girl is infectious, perhaps particularly for me, as the show centers around the upper east side and a blog (my life much?).

the girls always look fabulous. after close examination though, i realized they follow just a few easy rules to achieve their fabulosity. here, i enumerate for you, the fashion, beauty, and life lessons of gossip girl:

  1. while you can spend a million dollars on clothes, you don't have to. these girls use accessories (which can be quite cheap!) to turn a simple black dress into an eye-catching outfit. the main trick is a splash of bright color.
get yourself some bright opaque tights at welovecolors.com. headbands are everywhere, check claire's accessories for a huge assortment that's inexpensive and unique. and, if you are feeling daring, you can try streekers (not to be confused with streaking) temporary vibrant color streaks/highlights for hair, an easy and cheap way to add color at $9.95.
  2. in terms of the gossip girl makeup, neutrals on eyes and lips with an overall glossy flush never hurt anyone. powder puff beauty has an array of young, sweet, glossy colors at a reasonable prices to help you capture the look. the "you glow girl" palette on the right has four fun, creamy lip and cheek colors for $45.
  3. and finally, a little authority goes a long way. so whatever you wear, wear it like you own the universe.

backstage at chris benz with lancome.

it was a dream come true for me to be invited to cover lancome's backstage preparation of the models in chris benz's presentation for spring/summer 2008. i sorta of fled la office when i got the email inviting me and ran to the new york yacht club (where the presentation was being held).

first there is the necessary equipment (take a look at all those brushes!):

i spoke with lancome artist daniel martin who created the look for this show. daniel explained that he focused on a dewy, relatively nude, hand-sculpted, clean (as opposed to gritty or bronzy) look for the skin. the emphasis of this look is a return to the lip, rather than the eye, as the focus on the face. lips and cheeks wore an exaggerated natural flush. a few simple coats of mascara helped open up the model's eyes. to create the fabulous girlish pop seen on the model's mouths, lancome's color fever lipstick in SOS pink was layered under their coral rush juicy tube:

and voila! a couple hours later, you have the finished product:

fashion weekend.

and now for the post you've all been waiting for (or at least i have); a rundown of my runway-centric weekend. note: when talking about runway shows, i'm going to be focusing on the makeup looks from the shows and not so much on the clothes, because that's what i do best. also, keep in mind these looks are for spring/summer 2008.

costello tagliapietra runway show (friday) - all the models had bird's nest hair - curly loose buns with lots of loose curls. skin was unbronzed and beyond dewy, almost waxy. eyes were in the bright neutrals from the nars sundance duo, following a circular arching. lips were matte and blotted in a bold, dusty, pinky red. clothes were solid color and had a nice sway to them.

shu uemura boutique party (friday) - i was joined by my lovely friend noelle for this event. here, i purchased glow on blush in P Red 14. that is some fierce blush. also, sadly, we bid farewell to the soho boutique location while the prosecco and hors d'oeuvre flowed freely.

M.A.C. cosmetics reception (saturday) - the wonderful heather from M.A.C organized a reception in the tents for some beauty bloggers. i knew erika would be there, and since i love her blog, i was beyond thrilled to actually meet her, and she was every bit as fun and sweet as her writing. additionally, i got to meet elke, a celebrity makeup artist who doubles as one of my heroes.

lunch and dinner with the beauty bloggers (saturday) - since i had so much fun meeting my fellow beauty bloggers, i decided to join them for both lunch and dinner. julia is a marvel, i always love a girl who loves to talk food and wine in addition to beauty. i also had the the pleasure of spending time with shannon and ellen. and the lovely teri, who not only writes an awesome blog but also works on the new site splendicity. dinner gave me a chance to chat away with lianne and nichelle.

naeem khan runway show (tuesday): hair was bobbed and coiffed. again, skin was very natural, not bronzed. the lips were a loud smack of shiny pink-based red, while cheeks were sculpted and eyes were down-played. clothes were flowing and often used one bright color patterned with white.

still to come: a full blow-by-blow of my time backstage with lancome at the chris benz presentation.

a contest and a change of address (sort of).

hi beauties! i'm so exhausted from my fashion week-ness. i promise to have the full report of my (incredible) weekend up sometime this week (including shout-outs to all the amazing beauty bloggers i got to meet), but not today!

contest: as a sneak preview i will tell you all the models at the costello tagliapietra were wearing the nars sundance duo eyeshadow. nars describes the colors as indian yellow and matte terracotta, but i call them butter and burnt butter. this stunning shadow was also the goodie bag at the show, and it just so happens i was able to finagle an extra one to give away to a lucky reader! in order to be in the running all of you have to do is post a (non-anonymous) comment on any of my posts this week, starting with this post running through friday. i will then randomly draw a name and post the winner next monday. good luck!

new address: in other exciting news, you can now also visit me at www.makeuplovesme.com, if you haven't already. both www.makeuplovesme.blogspot.com and www.makeuplovesme.com will land you in the same place, but one will save you a little bit of typing.

emerald city.

im loving green-gold shimmer. and for some reason, its subtle leprechaun charm is popping up every where i look! to the left, rose mcgowan looks gorgeous in this gown. this pretty, softer, magical color is finally replacing the bright kelly green, which managed to stay an "in" color for the last few seasons. if you are not rose mcgowan this color may work best
when used as an accent, try as accessories and eyeshadow accents.

my picks:

BC footwear - "outta this world" in cream available at love my shoes.

hard candy - glitter liner in pickle available at sephora.

i also love MACs flashtronic pigment in copperized, but couldn't find a good image of it. its v. color-rich.

fall fashion preview! (guest bloggist)

Hello friends! I'm here to offer some tips for getting ahead of the curve as we wind down summer and head into fall. While it may seem a bit early, just remember, fashion never sleeps. What's hot today will end up hidden in your closet with your capri pants tomorrow. With a little bit of foresight you can stay stunning as the weather cools and never worry about appearing on Ugly Outfits NYC, a website of unfortunate fashion choices, taken from the streets of New York. Fall is always an interesting season for fashion, motivated partly by the reality of the weather as it is by looking fabulous. But fear not! Keeping these tips in mind you'll be turning heads in no time.

1. Sleek Silhouettes

A change from the bubble skirts and flowing lines of summer, fall will be emphasizing a much narrower shape. While bulkier clothing becomes somewhat unavoidable, there are lots of options for the fashion forward. Belted coats and tailored dresses will keep you warm and stylish. The ever popular Marc Jacobs show us how it's done:

2. Hats are where it's at!
This fall you'll be covering your head in style as hats are going to be a must have accessory for the fashionable. Designers have been exhibiting a wide range of styles, but make no doubt about it, hats are where it's at. I won't predict which style will flourish, as different outfits work with different things. Some designers, like Vera Wang, opt for a simple look with nothing more than a head scarf. Fur is always going to be on the runways, but for a simpler look, I turn to the elegant, low pulled style shown at Proenza Schouler:

3. Chunky sweaters

While dresses are slimming down, sweaters will be doing just the opposite. Chunky knits will be everywhere, in both sleek profile and looser, more comfortable cuts. These choices pose a potential pitfall when choosing an outfit, however. They work best with slim lines because without everything looks baggy, something that's rarely a good look. (Apologies to all the gangsta rappers I just offended.) Calvin Klein offers a great example of the slim dress, chunky sweater look:

4. 80's revival - zippers

It seems like every season these days something from the 80's gets brought back into vogue and fall is no exception. Exposed zippers will be de rigueur, whether highlighted in bright colors or simple black. The 80's colors that have become more popular of late will remain, but only in the form of accessories. I predict, however, that they will be less ubiquitous in New York than in Europe. This Derek Lam number uses the exposed zipper to add some much needed flair to a vast expanse of gray:

5. Colors

Colors are always more restrained in the fall and this year is no exception. The dominant color combination on the runways was a classic, navy blue and black. This can be something as simple as adding a black belt to a blue ensemble or putting a blue cardigan on top of a black dress. Creating color combinations that stand out is difficult when you're starting with such muted colors, so make sure you create a contrast between colors in your outfit. Use lighter blues when adding color to a black base and darker blues as a base when adding black. Restraint is important, however, as even muted colors can look garish if matched improperly. Anna Sui uses a light blue pattern to on top of black to make both colors stand out:

So there you have it, a quick look at the styles you'll be seeing more of come fall. Hope these gave you some ideas to keep your clothes looking hip!

give me libertine!

::sigh::
ive fallen in love again with a designer-inspired lipstick creation. chanel's libertine rouge allure (#34) has become my newest obsession. strong pink with a hint of coral, it has a luscious summer-y brightness, which compliments lighter skin tones.

additionally, libertine is the july designer for target's designer line. i have seen the line and would describe it as preppy meets punk. its cute. available july 15th. target.com

quite rad.

rejoice! radcakes has launched a teeshirt, hoodie, and accessories line in time for summer! this collection is perfect for strolling the boardwalk, bonfires on the beach, and backyard barbecues. while many independent artists have been starting silk-screened lines lately, i like radcakes because they have a unique eye for graphics placement. and their trippy designs make for fun conversation. the earrings under "goodies" are quite charming as well. and if all this hasn't been enough to convince you, funnyman zach galifianakis endorses their stickers. what more do you need?

i return to america to learn that nude is the "in" neutral for this coming season. the new summer 2007 nars (my most favorite makeup brand) collection - "coquette" takes summer all nude. see it here: http://www.narscosmetics.com/acb/stores/1/collection_home.aspx

im eyeing the thebes eyeshadow duo.
