ok, so it wasn't so much a date, as a total beauty organized informal interview, but it was beyond fabulous. in the cut-throat world of fashion and beauty, ted gibson is the most genuine and good-hearted person and it shines through in everything he says and does.
me and the girls sat down with ted at his salon and enjoyed prosecco and chocolate-covered strawberries. ted dished about the upcoming product releases from his eponymous product line, his childhood in texas, and his hands-on mentorship of the stylists in the salon. he is working on some sort of terrific new dry shampoo that i'm already all excited for. see the current offerings in his beautifully packaged and heavenly-scented product line here.
picture shows: anne, ted gibson, erika, risi-leanne, amber and me.

my faux-preference? lashes. i. love. fake. lashes. if i could go on some sort of magical themed vacation to false lashes, i would (don't ask me anything more about this idea, i'm not totally sure what i mean either).
to get you ready for my next post, showcasing all of my favorite false lashes (get excited), i have an interview for my mlm readers from celebrity makeup artist rea ann silva with her best false falsh tips!
- the first thing to do is to carefully remove the eyelash from the form that it is glued to. start on the outer end and gently pull the eyelash to the center.
- measure the proper length of the false eyelash for your eye, by placing it casually across the length of your eyelash. if it is too long, take visual note and snip the extra length away. It will look more natural if you do this. eyelashes do not come one size fits all!
- it is much easier to apply a natural looking lash if you first use a little eyeliner across your lash line. make a cat eye or just a smudged liner look on the lash line. this will help to camouflage any application mistakes or unevenness.
- after you have measured and cut the lashes, use an orange stick to apply the eyelash glue to the false eyelashes. dip the tip of the orange stick into the glue and drag the glue across the cord of the lash.
- do this to both lashes before you attempt to apply them. giving the glue a little time to become tacky really helps the eyelash from slipping around on your eye while you are trying to get it on the right spot!
- to place the eyelash on the right spot of the eye, place the mid way point of the false eyelash above the iris of your own eye. this will put the middle of the lash approximately in the middle of the length of your eyelid. looking in a more downward direction, place the tacky eyelash onto the lined center of the lid. then place the inner corner (close to the nose) into place, then work securing the lash out to the outside of the eye.
- repeat this process on the other eye.
* bonus: after you have placed the eyelashes on the eye and are satisfied with the placement, take your orange stick and with the clean end and hide the cord! you do this by placing your index finger under your lashes pointing towards your nose. close your eye with your index finger now pressing upward on your lashes. now take the orange stick in your other hand and gently roll down, lengthwise towards your lash line, pushing excess skin onto the glue that is on the false lash. if this is done correctly, the entire fake eyelash cord becomes hidden by the now excess skin that is being held in place by the excess glue on the eyelash. our eyes have excess skin on the lids, so that we can blink comfortably!) this is a trick that make up artists had to know in order to pass the very difficult union Journeyman Make Up test. This was an industry trade secret! thanks to rea ann for the awesome tips. i'm a little scared to do this to my eye, but i'm going give it a try! stay tuned beauties, more faux-cation to come! image: beautyblender.net

i've been getting so many emails about the oscars you would think i was getting an award (i so am not). after finally sorting it all out, i bring you the highlights of oscar red carpet beauty prep and news.
heidi klum seems to be the busiest bee in the business this week. yesterday she and victoria's secret makeup artist linda hay teamed up to talk about the best kept style and beauty secrets in hollywood. she has also worked with victoria's secret to create a diamond pendant gift for the best actress nominees and is working with diet coke as the spokeswoman for the red dress campaign to raise heart disease awareness amongst women.
image: linda hay working on heidi klum
i was lucky enough to submit a question to linda hay for my readers, and here it is:
what steps are taken so that red carpet makeup stays intact for several hours?
her response: start with an oil-free moisturizer so you don't get too shiny as the night wears on. i like the sheer foundations and concealers from very sexy makeup, which don't cake and flake, and allow skin to breathe. to make your eye makeup last, make sure you apply liner and shadow after you've prepared the eye with a light touch of concealer and powder so the color will set and adhere longer. when you're at the event, make sure to check your makeup every hour. if you have limited room in your evening bag, take beauty rush blotting sheets, a powder compact with mirror, a small blush brush to apply powder, and your very sexy lip gloss or lipstick of choice so you're armed with the necessities to keep your makeup sexy and glamorous all night long.

l'oreal has created a special limited edition version of their infalliable never fail lipcolour in red carpet red to commemorate the evening. available only in february 2008, at lorealparis.com and l'oreal boutiques, $11.99.
in the paradoxical topic of men's beauty (kidding), emerging star and man who rivals the boyfriend in charm, john krasinski (jim from the office) is a devotee of zirh men's skincare.
and who's getting ready for the big night where: linda evangelista and mark wahlberg both have appointments at ole henriksen for facials. and finally, fekkai products and stylists will be used to prep marion cotillard and jen garner.

while you were busy sleeping in on president's day, i was researching the next big thing for you. i went to three custom color specialists' manhattan's color studio to learn more about what makes them different from other makeup companies. well, it turns out quite a lot.
at the essence of all their products and services seems to be their deep commitment to color as a science. chad, one of the company's three co-owners, kindly took the time to explain their offerings to me.

chad really is some sort of color magician. he explained how all of the colors in the company's ready-to-wear line are separated into warm and cool. he declared me a "warm" tone and went on to say that their apple honey lip gloss wand would look perfect on me. up until then he seemed like a very knowledgeable guy, but this color on me (see swatch at left)?! but, i took the color home with me, not wanting to be rude, and it turns out, this color, on me, is a great thing.
but, i think the best thing about three custom color is their response to what is probably the biggest complaint i hear about makeup: a beloved product has been discontinued, what's a girl to do? three custom color specialists' response to this is ingenious. they do not discontinue any colors in their ready-to-wear line, for starters, and better yet, if you send them the tiniest sample of any discontinued product (minus liquid foundation and nail polish) they can match the color for you and custom blend a new one. even if you don't have a sample, give them a call because they have thousands of discontinued color formulas on file. they have been making lipsticks for the always flawless angelina jolie ever since her favorite guerlain shade was discontinued.
also: is this palette of theirs not the most brilliant idea in the world?! it's a century in red lip palette. each color represents a different decade between 1900-2000 and the corresponding red that was popular during this time. i love the high level of historical and cultural knowledge at three custom blend specialists. every piece has a complex story behind it, but this one is my favorite.
experience three custom color specialists yourself by visiting their website and if you like, you can make an appointment to go their studio for a consultation.

last tuesday i returned (with amber!) to lancome's upper westside boutique for an event to welcome their new beauty at every age expert, celebrity makeup artist sandy linter. linter has an incredibly impressive resume, including working on supermodel gia back in the late 1970s. she continues to be a powerhouse artist, so the pairing between her and lancome should be a great one. i look forward to seeing what comes out of it!

today (02/13/08) is the official launch of MAC's collaboration with french graffiti artist, fafi. fafi herself was at henri bendel to introduce the new makeup line. i was super fortunate to get a little time with fafi - she gave me an exclusive interview for makeup loves me readers!
in this picture - fafi, me and a fafinette come to life at the event.
first of all, fafi is just as coy and minx-y as the characters she creates. she has the those blunt, french-girl bangs, clear skin and doe eyes.
mlm: what made you want to collaborate with MAC?
fafi: they contacted me. here i was this little french girl in their big american meeting, but it seemed like they were the right company for my line.
mlm: which is your favorite product in the fafi for MAC line?
fafi: the iridescent pressed powders because you can really see the graphic i created on the case.
mlm: who do you envision buying this collection?
fafi: young people and also metro women. people who appreciate the craziness and originality (of the collaboration).
mlm: what's the best thing about being french?
fafi: being natural. the french don't say things that they don't mean. also, i love living in paris because you can people watch and see all kinds of women there.
mlm: which fafinette are you most similar to?
fafi: each of them contains a bit of me.
mlm: which is your favorite?
fafi: ermine.
mlm: me too! what can we expect to see coming up for fafi?
fafi: i'm working on a comic.
i bought a fafi makeup bag at the event and had fafi "tag" it - it reads "fafi pour marina". i am still in awe of my time with fafi, she truly is effortlessly cool. check out the whole line here.
and, hint, hint to all boyfriends: these whimsical, feminine characters make for a great valentine's day gift.

the charismatic charlotte tilbury used MAC products to create the look for wednesday evening's temperley london show. i spoke with tilbury amongst the chaotic backstage scene.
her inspiration? the 70s woman. the look? skin was matte and perfected, with silverish highlights on the tips of cheekbones, chin and nose and a little bronzer on the cheek. eyes were the focus. tilbury created an elongated (but not catty) eye with MAC's shadestick in sharkskin. lips were washed out with MAC pro product lip erase.

MAC's gordon espinet created the look for this season's THREEAsFOUR runway show, which took place saturday evening. i went backstage and spoke to gordon about the look. he wanted the girls to have a radiant, healthy look - "like they drink milk everyday", but combined with a rock star glam, which he achieved with shocking blue lashes.
their flushed cheeks were achieved with a new rosy mineralized blush. MAC is tweaking the formula based on the runway shows and the finished product should be available to the public in the fall (i will definitely be letting you know when this comes out!).
the amazing blue lashes were painted that color with fluidline in royal wink (a MAC pro color).
the unofficial shoe of fashion week? i saw my friend heather from MAC backstage and we were both wearing seychelle's "with a twist" shoes. i have seriously been wearing them all week because they are so cute and comfortable.
makeup loves me would like to give the biggest thank you ever to total beauty for making me an i-correspondent and helping me obtain backstage access. i could not have brought you this coverage without them!

mercedes benz fashion week kicked off in nyc yesterday morning. following tradition, thursday's wwd contained the pantone top 10 color list for fall 2008. blue iris (see the color at left) was #1.
but what i'm most eager to share with you are the runway makeup looks that are being created backstage to go with the trends for fall 2008. last night i went backstage at project runway designer victorya hong's show and spoke with the head makeup artist, lynsey laskowski. lynsey told me that the focus of the show's look would be bright pops of color on the cheek and mouth in a matching shade. she made the colors by mixing several lipsticks then using the same shade for both the cheek and lip. hair was flat, straight and shiny, like a cascade of water. (by the way, i absolutely fell in love with this model backstage. she was the sweetest girl. i wish i had caught her name, but i wish her the best of luck.)
it's off to a long day at the bryant park tents for me. keep checking back, because as often as possible, i will be updating you on all the latest in makeup innovation as it happens.

i hope you like superlatives, because this post is gonna be full of them.
i had the most amazing morning at henri bendel's beauty breakfast. ted gibson was there (in. the. flesh.), and one of his assistants, devin gave me the most fantastic blow-out of my life (and yes, it was just as sexy as that sentence makes it sound). my hair is huge, which i love.
by this point, i think we all know how picky i am about fragrance, but i tried two. one by etat libre d'orange, which happens to be the most fascinating french perfumerie. another by isabela capeto, the chicest brazilian designer. both stole my heart, so i'm sure you will be hearing more about them in the near future.
i also finally met amber from beauty blogging junkie - and seriously, she looks like serena van der woodsen from gossip girl. would i lie about something like this? i also got to quickly catch up with two of my favorites, erika from makeup bag and julia from all about the pretty. i wish i could show you just how beautiful everyone looked. why don't i ever remember to take pictures?!
and if you can believe it, i have another product release/breakfast event to attend tomorrow morning! so stay tuned for more, hopefully superlative, tales.

i went to space NK apothocary for the total beauty web editor event earlier this week and had a fabulous time. space NK is an artful and soothing store located in soho. it carries all your old favorites (nars and laura mercier) and all of your soon-to-be new favorites (face boutique and philip b). their staff is attentive and they even have a spa space (which i'm a sucker for).
while i was there i got to do all my favorite things: shop for makeup and catch up with some of my favorite online editors. celebrity makeup artist and founder of the beauty blog network, elke, helped me with my red lipstick purchase. her tip? press your lips quickly against a tissue (not a full blot) to see how your red will wear. without food or drink that is what the color will look like in two hours. two of the best and prettiest editors (and two of my favorites) erika and julia were in attendance. i also got to meet daneen and antonia, which was a pleasure because they are both such clever writers. i also got to meet ben of we love beauty and annie from blogdorf goodman who have their own special spins on beauty writing. it was truly a fantastic evening!
