review: nars pure matte lipstick.

this picture was taken at brunch last weekend at the smith (so good!) where i got to catch up with my best friends. i'm on the right, wearing nars pure matte lipstick in carthage (hot pink).

i've wanted to try nars pure matte lipsticks for almost a year, and now that i finally have they have met at all my expectations. i have carthage (hot pink) and vesuvio (full bodied red), and am already thinking about which colors i want next. my eye is on you, madere (nude pink)!

nars pure matte lipsticks are known for having a truly matte finish with rich color payout, i couldn't think of a better combination for creating a distinctive, signature lip. plus, it's matte texture makes it easy to keep color in place.

$25 at narscosmetics.com.

holiday gift idea: tween.

the geogirl products are natural products with eco-conscious packaging that are ideal for the new makeup user.

if there is a tween on your holiday gift list, look no further. the products offer a natural look (read: there is very little color payout), which is perfect for a younger girl, the chance of accidental clown face is next to none. plus, the parents will be happy to know that the line avoids dangerous chemical additives.

plus, the geogirl community is something any tween will be enthused about. the website aims to interact with their users - including a feature where girls can vote for which causes (including endangered wildlife, animal shelters and community gardens) that they believe geogirl should donate a portion of their proceeds.

holiday gift idea: hostess.

the jo malone christmas cracker contains a 9mL grapefruit cologne + lime basil & mandarin body & hand wash + pomegranate noir body creme.

it's a known fact that all hostesses love jo malone. gift this to your hostess and she'll have a few little somethings to spoil herself with once the guests clear out. plus, this packaging is to die for. at $30 this is way better than bringing another bottle of champagne to the party.

review: lush cosmetics lust soap.

it's happened! my favorite scent has been made into a soap.

lust - lush's "adult fragrance" - is a primal jasmine scent. this is one of those fragrances that dictates the tone of the wearer's day, and the tone is aphrodisiac prime. previously available only as a perfume, a 3.5 ounce hunk now sells for $7.95 on lushusa.com.

ps - lush has also turned lust into a lustre dusting powder - a scented fine gold shimmer. $14.95 on lushusa.com.

review: sk-II skin signature eye cream.

sk-II skin signature eye cream is the latest addition to the niche, luxury sk-II line. the line uses an extract from sake -- after the brand's founder saw that sake makers had hands that looked years younger than their stated age.

this eye cream is the perfect thickness - heavy enough to feel soothing, and light enough to absorb in a minute. at this point, i'm wearing it as my eye makeup, it makes my eyes look that much better - less puffy in minutes. combine with mascara and liquid liner, and i'm out the door. also, it comes with a little plastic scoop, so that users aren't double dipping their dirty fingers in the jar - i love!

this product is a holiday season savior. $110 at shop.sk-ii.com.

fire engine red lips - 11 swatches.

i love a deliberate lip. today i'm featuring fire engine red lips - the most intentional and iconic of lip colors.

i reserve my bold red lips color for the cooler weather, as a smudging and makeup melt are a defined red lip's mortal enemy. additionally, i also usually apply color this intense with a lip brush, rather than using the tube, because precision is necessary.

from elbow to wrist:

i chose these shades from over 60 possible contenders - any one of this lipsticks will provide the perfect vibrant red lip.

however, i have two standouts:

if you want the lip to have an almost neon red quality - a red that is truly magnetic - choose bobbi brown old hollywood.

if you are looking for a vibrant poppy red that goes on easily and stays in place (i've applied it without a mirror - that's how confident i've become in this shade), go with covergirl lip perfection lipcolor flame.

baubles are a girl's best friend (dedicated).

when choosing clothing and makeup each day, follow somewhat formulaic standards such as what looks best, or what's on trend, or ideally both. however, choosing our jewelry often relies on much more intuitive and subconscious associations, with different pieces reminding us of our current and past relationships, some pieces giving us strength or others reminding us of to be humble or patient. throughout a women's life, the jewellery she choses for herself, and that which she receives as gifts, build a bank of accessories that also serve as talismans - that she may choose to protect her for each days unique challenges.

even though gold and jewelry prices continue to rise, it's remains important for women to choose pieces for themselves that reflect their taste and that they will cherish. jewelry is used to mark many landmarks - certainly the iconic diamond engagement rings come to mind, but there are numerous other occasions that can and are marked with a bauble - graduations, birthdays, anniversaries and friendships all call for the perfect trinket.

i have many, many favorite pieces of jewelry from just these instances. however, the three most powerful pieces i own are:

  • my best friend necklace - my two best friends and i all have identical necklaces tiny gold necklaces, engraved with our nicknames for other another.
  • my art deco diamond ring - a gift from my mother, when i was 25, that she bought for herself when she was 25. she knew the piece was a little outside of her budget, but that she would treasure it forever. every time i look at this ring i'm reminded of the importance of taking chances and believing in yourself.
  • my gold bar earrings - a recent birthday gift from my boyfriend, these earrings are delicate, yet unique (much how i sometimes like to think of myself). i have yet to wear them without receiving a compliment.
the power of saying it with metal and stone is why new traditions, such as eternity rings and friendship bracelets, quickly become part of our cultural lexicon. don't forget to give beautiful pieces to yourself and your friends, beauties!

new: essie luxeffects for holiday 2011.

as someone who loves intricate (and shiny!) nails, i am 100% enamored with luxeffects, essie's new collection of multi-dimensional top coats for holiday 2011. these polishes are to add that extra bling either when layered over one's favorite essie polish, or when worn alone. either way the goal is to customize one's polish to create a signature look.

the collection:

  • as gold as it gets – gilded lamé sparkles
  • shine of the times – scintillating opalescence
  • a cut above – shattered pink diamond glitz
  • pure pearlfection – decadent iridescence
  • set in stones – disco mirror ball chaos
my favorites are a cut above and set in stones - the two "glitter" polishes. they are both a mix chunkier glitter (like in a deborah lippmann polish) and finer glitter -- so much glitter!

essie’s luxeffects collection will be available in december 2011 in salons and beauty destinations worldwide.

dating tips (dedicated).

image: vosges chocolates

beauties, i not a dating expert (i'm a makeup expert), but i am in a very happy relationship. often at beauty events my fellow beauty blogging girlfriends will ask me for my dating secrets. after years of living in NYC, doing some dating myself, and trying to set up very single person i meet (i'm a bit of a yenta), i've come up with five universal dating tips to bestow.

here are my top recommendations for dating success:

1. choose wisely. your time is precious. more and more dating pre-selection occurs online now - which is great! you get to learn all the "first date" things about someone before actually spending a minute with them. if you know something is a non-negotiable for you, don't waste your (or their) time.

2. be yourself, absolutely, but don't be scary. if you collect snakes, make vegan chicken fingers for a living, and reside in your parents basement, good for you! but wait a little bit until the person you are dating gets to know you better before sharing these details. stick to the more normal facts about yourself, if you and this person are compatible and enjoying yourselves, slowly expose them to the more personal and potentially embarrassing parts of the real you.

3. read the signs. if someone likes you, they call you and try to make plans with you. if they aren't doing that, it's like the book says, he's just not that into you. if someone tells you they don't want to get married, and you do, trust that they are telling you the truth. hear what's being said to you, not just what you want to hear.

4. as we get older, dating gets more complicated including dating after divorce, or dating for parents. if this is the case for you, be sure to be upfront and matter-of-fact about what baggage you come with. if you aren't ashamed of your past, your potential partner won't be intimidated by it.

5. have fun! if you aren't enjoying yourself, no one else will enjoy you either. good luck out there!

review: mark earn your metal liquid shimmer eyeliner.

like most normal humans, i like to start my monday off with some shimmer. mark has two metallic liquid liners - silverado and liquid gold - for holiday 2011, and i'm currently wearing both of them. liquid gold is on my top lash line, and silverado adorning my lower lid.

the spongy pointed applicator makes for an easy application. however, the actual color payout is more of a shimmer than a super intense metallic. in order to build some extra color layered application is needed. still, it creates a unique look that brightens up my monday.

$10 at meetmark.com, holiday exclusive.

review: revlon grow luscious plumping.

beauties, it's 11.11.11 - a palindromal dream come true! but all of my wishes have already been granted, because i've been testing a new mascara every week, and every one m- from the mass market to the makeup counter versions - have been meeting my expectations.

this week i've been using revlon's grow luscious plumping, the 3rd iteration of their grow luscious mascara series. the mascara promises to separate lashes with it's tapered brush, while the formula plumps them with for up to 200% of their volume. i've had another great lash week because of it. it's another mascara to bring on huge dramatic lashes, and this one comes with a mass market price tag - $7.99 on drugstore.com.

available in blackest black, black, and blackened brown - i prefer blackest black to maximize the intensity.

review: caress fine fragrance elixirs.

i've already reviewed this product, but at the that time i didn't realize i would still be in love with it months later (see my original review here).

black orchid & juniper oil and red lychee & patchoili oil are fragrance perfection -- the ideal blends of sweet and sultry --they make feel magical, like the carpet ride scene in aladin. caress, this is my official plea for you to create more fine fragrance elixirs. invite me to your workshop and we brainstorm exotic scents. in the meantime i will continue to rotate these two wonders.

and for all you beauties who haven't tried these two scents yet, get into it. for less than $5 at your local drugstore, you can't get anything as special for 3x the price.

new: holiday 2011 palettes from bobbi brown and lancome.

holiday compacts are starting to appear on counters -- and these two are irresistible. bobbi brown's party shimmer brick and lancome's poudre lumiere in golden hat have me gazing lovingly all day.

both compacts are the piece de resistance of exquisite holiday collections. bobbi's party collection is a celebration of old time glitz and glam, sprinkled with a healthy dose of metallics (expect to see more reviews of some of my favorite pieces in this collection in the coming weeks). lancome's golden hat foundation holiday collection is a collaboration with kate winslet to raise awareness and funds for the golden hat foundation, a charity for children with autism. the color collection focuses on kate's signature shades, including several bright lip and nail shades.

even though i love these compacts -- and especially love how they look together -- these are exactly the kind of compacts i have trouble using. i always want them to stay beautiful and untouched, but if you are the sort of person who can bring yourself to let them get disheveled - they both make a perfect highlighting powder or you can use any one of the colors from either compact as a shimmery eyeshadow.

  • bobbi brown party shimmer brick - $40 at bobbibrown.com
  • lancome poudre lumiere in gold hat - $40 at lancome.com

review: mask market at gotham skincare.

my customized masque treatment at gotham skincare

one of my favorite parts of sleepover camp was homemade masques. i would slather the other girls' faces with yogurt and honey, just knowing we were getting more gorgeous by the second. this love of DIY-inspired beauty is probably part of my i love the mask market, the newest facial at gotham skincare.

for this treatment the esthetician - in my case, the lovely megan - uses antioxidant rich foods to custom blend a masque, based on each customers needs. my masque was a blend of yogurt, avocado, edamame and blueberries (pictured above!) - to enhance moisture and glow.

the facial itself was perfect for a pre-event treatment -- i left glowing, not red and blotchy. oftentimes if i know a facial is going to involve a lot of extractions i'll book over a week before a special occasion. while megan did extractions, she didn't prod, leaving me ready for a night on the town.

to book your own mask market visit gothamskincare.com, their current space could be described as "cozy", but they are moving into more spacious digs my the end of the month, still in the columbus circle neighborhood.

review: redken shades EQ cream.

it's fall -- which means i go kardashian! not in the stage-a-wedding and get divorced two months later way (i have literally spent hours reading about the demise of kim's marriage and am still mystified), just in the raven-tressed sense.

gone are the days of summer sun, and sun-kissed hair. now is the time for a solid, shiny dark hair. to that aim, i visited david stanko at the angelo david salon for some color tweaking. david colored my hair last fall - when i returned from redhead to my natural brown (read about that here), and is an expert in the art of the consultation, aka listening to what the customer wants. he used redken's shades eq cream, , to give me a rich, autumnal brown. shades eq cream is redken's latest demi-permanent color/glossing treatment; perfect for those of us, like kim k, who are looking to minimize our commitments! the subtle change in my hair makes me feel ready for fall.

thank you to david stanko and his team for being good listeners and helping to design my color.

review: dr dennis gross alpha beta glow pad.

beauties, i'm not one to GTL. in fact, i try to avoid all those things both individually and collectively. however, no one can say no to a little glow.

a couple months ago i attended a nordstrom's panel discussion on fall trends that featured dr. dennis gross alpha beta glow pads. the pads are single use towelettes of exfoliating self tanner. beauty experts noted that the pads are a great way to maintain the last hints of your summer glow -- and after testing them, i agree. the pads create a glow that lasts for a few days. keep in mind, this product is not a bronzer, it's a self tanner, meaning the color will continue to build for approximately 1 hour after applying, so don't overdo it!

$18 for a box of 10 at skincarerx.com.
