new: axe hair hold + touch.

axe continues to add to their hair care venture - this time with hold + touch - 3 styling products divided by hair type:

  • hold + touch paste for fine hair
  • hold + touch spiking glue for normal hair
  • hold + touch cream wax for thick hair
i think this is super clever, because men know that certain products work for their hair or don't, but i've never seen a product before that actually markets to them knowing their type.

ariel - resident male tester used the the cream wax for thick hair to create a mini-mohawk. he says,
"it smells great, like most axe products. i'm always surprised at how much work they put into these products. this line - hold + touch - was created for strong hold, which i like because what guy wants to touch up their hair? no guy. it's also really easy to use; the product instructs users to rub vigorously between hands, and most guys have experience with that. so on the whole, i'm a fan."
hold + touch products are available at stores nationwide for approximately $8 a tube.

drybar comes to nyc.

a drybar doesn't sound like the sort of thing i'd be into (where are my drinks?!) but since LA loves theirs so much that drybar has had to open multiple west coast locations, i had to try out nyc's newest blowout haven.

drybar is a niche salon just for (gorgeous) blowouts, in fact their motto is "no cuts, no color -- just blowouts". and the price point is perfect - $40 - no matter the hair length or texture.

since they've narrowed their offerings, they are truly able to tailor each blowout. often when i get my hair "blown out", i end up with whatever look the stylist chose. drybar has a menu (see below) to help guide customers and stylists towards achieving the desired looked.

naturally, i ordered the manhattan. my hair stayed pin straight for 3 days. i will be back, drybar! a great blowout is such a pick-me-up, that i may even come back with no occasion on the books.

located at 4 west 16th street, appointments may be booked at thedrybar.com or by calling 877-379-2279.

review: covergirl lash perfection.

i love a mass brand mascara crush, and right now i'm having an affair with covergirl lash perfection. the formula is designed to create the 3D volume, elongating lashes from every angle. this is for a more

why i love it: every time i touch the wand to my lashes, they get longer, but no clumps form. the more i apply, the longer my lashes get, while staying separated and individual. it's a happy marriage of dramatic and believable.

available in brown, very brown, black and very black, it runs about $7 at mass retailers nationwide. visit covergirl.com to get colormatched!

review: illamasqua precision ink in havoc.

theatrical british brand illamasqua's fall 2011 collection - theatre of the nameless - is true to the brand's irreverent roots.

the collection is mixture of outlandish and more wearable products. the precision ink in havoc falls somewhere between outlandish and wearable, and has found its way onto my treasure bag (a small makeup case for my products currently in heavy rotation). this aubergine liquid liner is just red enough - noticeable, without looking like i've caught something infectious. the shade is original, yet wearable, making perfect for the subtle goth makeup look i'm into this fall. plus the sponge tip applicator provides easy application.

$27.50 at sephora.com.

review: neova eye cream and body repair lotion.

regular readers know my mom loves neova. here are some of my momma's latest thoughts on the brand and some of their latest products.

on neova eye treatment:
"I've been using the Eye Treatment daily and love the instant removal of the bags under the eyes. It also is a dream to use as I find all their products."

on neova maximum body repair lotion:
"Another product which is getting daily use is the Maximum Body Repair Lotion. My hands look better with less spots and generally a lighter appearance almost immediately after use. I have used perscription products and I'm getting better results with Maximum Body Repair. Here I have a suggestion for Neova, they need to make a purse size so it can be reapplied during the day. After a day of hand washing it needs refreshing."

on neova's packaging:
You must credit their engineers and management for creating products with such an efficient delivery system. These pumps and dispensers work the first time you use them to the last time when the creams have come to an end."

to experience the brand, visit nextderm.com, also know as the complete neova resource.

review: jo malone wild bluebell.

jo malone's newest fragrance - wild bluebell - is a light and whimsical floral. which is my absolute favorite sort of scent! the scent draws inspiration from fairytales, nature and the english --- all so perfect for an enchanted fall!

my only problem with this scent is that i'm worried it will lead to a falling out with me and my mom -- she's a huge jo malone fan, so normally i let her take my jo malone colognes, but this one's not going anywhere without a fight.

the top notes of fresh bluebell and clove are complimented by lily of the valley, eglantine, and jasmine, with a base of white amber and musk.

available in:
cologne 30ml - $55
cologne 100ml - $110
body & hand wash - $50
body creme - $75
home candle - $65

now being sold in jo malone shops, at jomalone.com, berdorf goodman, and select neiman marcus, saks 5th ave, nordstrom and bloomingdale's.

new: clinique black honey lipgloss/lipstick duo.

beauties - fashion week means i'm on the go - mostly because there a billion beauty lounges where i can get other people to style my hair for me (i have so much to tell you beauties about my hair!), but sometimes because i'm going backstage to get see the latest trends.

at any rate, when i'm rushing anything double-ended gets moved to the top of my purse must-haves, but clinique's black honey lipgloss/lipstick duo has become the product i will not leave my house without. the star piece of clinique's fall 2011 collection - the new black - this duo combines the iconic black honey almost lipstick and the beloved black honey lipgloss.

lately i've been loving a "covert goth" look - vampy, yet subtle. during the day i rock the gloss for a sexy, darker-than -usual gloss. in the evening i go all out, layering the gloss over the lipstick for sexy, but not-so-dark-it's scary lip. best yet? it can stand on its own or it can pair incredibly well with a dramatic eye.

$20 at sephora.com.

backstage: costello tagliapietra for spring/summer 2012.

beauties - a little sneak peak at what you will be seeing in spring 2012. the look at costello tagliapietra was sophisticated, yet fresh; an appropriate look for women of all ages. as deborah lippmann herself told me, the look is "grown up".

plus, refined, neat hair and greige nails both proved that they are here to stay for another season.

hair: nelson vercher with redken
nails: deborah lippmann with beauty.com
makeup: MAC cosmetics

top photo credit: lelanie foster; others property of makeuplovesme.com

to create the nails: layer lippmann's fashion polish over her waking up in vegas shade, then top it with her on a clear day ultra shiny top coat.

to create the hair:
1) start off with wet hair. layer three different redken products. now, the order in which the products are applied is of great importance, in order to create the effect of humidity, but in a more glamorous way. 1st - apply a heavy creme leave-in conditioner by redken. 2nd - apply a silicone product (glass 01 by redken). 3rd - add a holding product (redken volume 06). apply all the product starting at the nape of the neck.

2) create "the twist!". divide the hair into 2 sections, separating the top from the bottom. work with the bottom section first and roll and roll the twist upwards.

3) then, switch to the top section of hair, using ingers, create a claw and rake the top/front of the hair. this will give the hair texture and create a disheveled look, so it won't look too perfect. roll the twist downwards. this creates two opposing twists - the top twist is rolled under (facing downwards) and the bottom twist is rolled up (facing upwards).

4) now to connect the top and bottom twists. take hairpins (not bobby pins) and put them all in on the diagonal. finish with a little redken glass 01 to the top of the hair for added shine.

review: tulip garden from project art by NEST fragrances.

like most reasonable people, i want my house to smell good, but i also really like to cook. the latter makes the former surprisingly difficult. but turning my home into a sensory sanctuary has become somewhat of a fixation in the past month. knowing that fashion week and the other hectic-ness that fall brings were heading my way, i wanted to zen-ify my house through scent.

step 1 - identify dream scent. mine is tulip garden from project art by NEST fragrances. i reviewed the candle here last fall, and rather than getting sick of it, i've fallen more in love with it ever since. it's a very fresh and not headache-inducing floral. when my home smells like tulip garden my mood lifts instantly.

step 2 - find ways to have the scent subtly take over. the problem with just having the tulip garden candle was that my house only smells like tulip garden when someone is actually home to burn the candle (otherwise it's quite dangerous). the reed diffuser is the most important step in keeping the scent level constant. the hand soap is also a great touch though, because this leaves guests with a subtle reminder of my signature scent when they leave my restroom.

in your pursuit of signature scent, i highly recommend project art by NEST. NEST makes delicately crafted home fragrance and project art is their mass brand - which maintains the mother brand's authenticity.

news: clinique + milly for fashion's night out.

clinique and milly are once again pairing up for a gift with purchase and fashion's night out. i'm not really covering FNO, because the noise surrounding it is making my dizzy, but this collaboration i like.

the preppy designer and classic makeup brand have worked together several times in the past to create gifts with purchase - and this is their latest. for every purchase over $25 at the clinique counter now through 9/18/11 customers will receive everything pictured above - one of the best value GWP i've seen.

additionally on FNO, 9/8/11/tomorrow (for those of you don't have the date hammered into your brains), milly designer michelle smith with be at bloomingdale's on 59th street greeting clinique customers from 5:30-7pm. so go enjoy your fashion's night out, if you're into that sort of thing.

new: bobbi brown marrakesh chic.

bobbi brown can do no wrong. her fall 2011 collection - marrakesh chic - is the latest thing on my obsession radar. bobbi says "from the dusty tones to the sandy textures, fall is about rich color made wearable."

after visiting the marketplace in marrakesh a few years back, bobbi was inspired by jars filled with saturated pigments, mounds of fabric in vibrant hues, burlap sacks of anise, cumin and turmeric spices and antique woven kilim rugs in beautifully weathered colors.

this color-soaked collection is made up of 8 rich color eye shadows and 5 lip colors. even though the colors are intense they are so wearable - this is bobbi's art. making bright, magical colors something every girl is comfortable in. even metallic lip color in violet glaze - which would seem impossible from any other brand - becomes manageable in bobbi's hands.

fall in love at bobbibrowncosmetics.com.

review: core fusion boot camp at exhale spa.

beauties, i recently attended the newest form of core fusion - boot camp - at exhale spa. first impression: it was so damn hard! i spent the entire class cursing the teacher in my mind and by the end i was convinced that i hated her, it was that hard.

core fusion is a hybrid of yoga, core conditioning, pilates and the lotte berk method. boot camp is the amped up form of core fusion, used to maximize results. after working my butt off for an hour, i left convinced that i would never be back and that i would wake up unable to move my arms of legs the next day -- but then something strange happened. i felt amazing the next day. my usually tense shoulders were relaxed. plus, over the next seven days my core seemed tighter and tigher - my tightest jeans even fit better. suddenly, i'm vying to get back to the class.

for an intense workout with maximal benefits, try exhale's core fusion boot camp. see exhalespa.com for locations and class schedules.
