new from MAC: quite cute!

are you familiar with the fake makeup kits for children? well, i am. and MAC's quite cute is what it would be like if those kits were REAL.

in a word, "CUTE!". MAC states that this collection is:

"The most fanciful, fun and flattering compliment a young, modern trendsetter could ever want! Our version is the girliest kind of international glam possible, a style ride that combines postage-stamp-sized puppies with pixie swizzle-stick fashion and butterfly kisses for cute boys and even cuter shoes! Cupcake icing colours, vintage romance, an ATM card with Hello Kitty on it – and a way of life that says “yes!” to everything adorable!"

and i have to agree, with at least some of that. what i know for sure is i like the mineralize blushes with the hearts baked right on them - and i probably need all three of them, and that i perhaps have a problem with excess.

get quite cute at maccosmetics.com and at MAC counters nationwide april 7 thru may 2011.

new from crabtree & evelyn: floral fragrance line.

crabtree & evelyn's new floral fragrance line is comprised of 4 single note iconic scents - lavender, lily, rosewater, and iris - one can't help but think of old world, european, romance. the packaging stays true this theme (and makes for great bathroom decor) -- understated glass bottles and paper boxes with watercolor designs of simple botanical illustrations.

i think i have this collection figured out, the goal is: make everything smell like spring. in addition to the single note fragrances, each of the scents has it's own accompanying bath & body, as well as home collection accompaniments - leading to a delightful total of 54 products in the line. each scent is a little different in terms of which products are in the line, but some highlights include; dusting powder, body cream (because it comes in a beautiful clear glass jar), drawer lining paper, and sachets. how could you not need those things?! that is the list of awesome things that i'm constantly looking for and having trouble finding. thank you, crabtree & evelyn, for thinking about the details!

the whole springy line is currently up at crabtree-evelyn.com and available in their stores.

review & swatch: sally hansen salon effects.

i can't say enough good things about sally hansen salon effects, but i'll try.

they are basically at-home minx manicure. salon effects are applique sticker manicures, available in over a dozen colors (including glitters and metallics) and various patterns. they are so easy to use, it's almost comical -- it involves little more than putting stickers on your nails. applying them for the first time took me less time than painting my nails.
bonus: since they are stickers, you don't have to wait for them to dry, which is usually when i end up ruining my nails.

my only complaint, it is a bit hard to get the stickers to lie totally flat, which may cause a problem with the solid colors but on my leopard prints (named: kitty, kitty) it's virtually unnoticeable (see below). do you like them, or do you love them?

final thoughts: sally -- email me, because i have at least 5 more pattern ideas for you. goodbye, $50 minx manis!

review: degree expert protection motion sense anti-perspirant & deodorant.

i like a lot of different deodorants (i'm a bit of a deodorant whore, because i make a habit of not smelling), but i love degree expert protection motion sense anti-perspirant & deodorant.

TMI moment: i'm usually not so sweaty, but lately i've been having some long days where my usual deodorants hadn't been cutting it. since switching to degree's newest formula, im dry and stank-free from 6am through the wee hours. supposedly, the formula provides an extra blast of protection when it senses movement, i can't attest to this, but i can say whatever it's doing, it's working.

available in fresh energy, active clean, and cotton fresh. nationwide wherever antiperspirants are sold this spring 2011.

review: lush emotibombs.

showering is already a fairly cathartic experience -- it's like being caught in a rainstorm on a daily basis -- but why not up the ante?

that's exactly what lush emotibombs do. emotibombs translate the aromatherapy experience of bath fizzes into the shower. place the emotibomb under the shower stream and it dissolves, creating a steam of pure sensory delight. available in 3 varietals:

  • up you gets: is your wake me up emotibomb, scented with uplifting lime and grapefruit oil.
  • sex in the shower: the name pretty much gives this one away. rich with aphrodisiacs rose and jasmine.
  • too drunk ...: full of fennel and peppermint oil, it's supposedly a hangover cure. it smells great, though i'm not sure i'd like it as much if i was hungover. i usually prefer the scent of lo mein at this time.
$4.50 per emotibomb, but you can easily break one in half and get two uses out of it. available at lushusa.com.

review: alma salon nyc.

alma of alma salon

within minutes of meeting alma (of the eponymous alma salon nyc) she tells me that just last weekend she was in her close friend's wedding and that her friend had "the hottest bridesmaids -- we all had long hair, same height, we were all just beautiful". right then, i knew alma was my soulmate. i love a woman who doesn't play modest - and sexpot alma does anything but.

she went on to tell me she would give me a light trim and bayalage-style highlights (sweeping highlights that start at the bottom of the hair for a very natural look and minimal roots) -- she claimed she was taking a little chance since this was her first time meeting me, but that she was pretty sure i would l-o-v-e it. as alma clattered around me on her 5-inch heels, i waited eagerly and hung on to her every word.

and in the end? i'm smitten! my new bayalage provides my super dark color with just a touch of sun-kissed light, my new cut freshened up my hair, and clever alma switched my part to create a new look for my in-the-middle-of-growing-out bangs. it feels as though some of sex appeal has rubbed off on me -- and everyone i saw that day couldn't get enough of my hair.

visit the alma salon at 38 east 21st street or on the web at almasalon.com. the salon can also be reached at 212.353.0600.

new from noxzema: clean blemish control for adult skin.

good news beauties, even though i'm squarely in my late 20s i still have acne. several birthdays where i believed this would be the year i was "too old to get zits" have come and gone, with breakouts still coming regularly.

having (somewhat) excepted the fact that i will be battling acne from now until eternity, i continue perfecting my plan of attack. as you get older your skin requires a much higher moisture level than when your in your teens, so the harsh zit zappers that worked when i was 17 now end up making my skin very red and flaky. the zit may be gone, but my face isn't looking any better.

the latest tool in my arsenal is noxzema clean blemish control foaming washing and clean blemish control daily scrub, both for adult skin. the specific focus of these washes is to treat acne without over-drying. unlike michael jackson, noxzema has people over 18 on their minds (too soon?).

available at drugstores near you, typically for under $6 a product.

backstage: cushnie et ochs - the caviar nail.

the nails backstage at cushnie et ochs were -- without a doubt -- the hottest thing i saw during fashion week for fall/winter 2011 this past february. celebrity nail tech pattie yankee and dashing diva collaborated to create black nails crusted in black seed beads (from the designer's collection), which were quickly dubbed "caviar nails".

tips from backstage to DIY the caviar nail:

1. apply 2 coats of dashing diva’s limo service polish

2. apply nail glue all over the nail

3. dip nails into black seed beads

4. sprinkle with black glitter

5. apply an activator spray to adhere

6. (optional) walk around knowing your the baddest b*tch there is.

enjoy, beauties!

tips for getting the most out of a spa visit (sponsored post).

beauties, 2011 is all about the spa days for me.

going to the spa for a massage or facial can be more refreshing than taking a nap, because spa time is totally devoted to you with no interruptions. letting go of your daily life may be easier said than done, which is why i'm offering you some tips to help you relax like it's your job:
  1. arrive 10-15 minutes early. arriving early gives you a chance to settle in before diving right into your appointment (and for most treatments, having to take your clothes off), get there early and get used to your surroundings first! this is especially crucial if this is your first appointment at a particular spa because you will likely have to fill out paper work and you don't want that cutting into your appointment time.
  2. arrange your appointment for a time will have time at least 15 minutes free after your appointment. many spas have areas to sit and relax (often with tea!) before heading back to the real world - why rush out when you could be prolonging your relaxation?
  3. communicate with your esthetician at the onset of the appointment about how much you want to talk during your treatment. for me, spa vouchers are like vows of silence; i talk all day long, so i want to enjoy total silence during my treatments. however, many people like to know what is going on and want to be talked through every step of their procedure. a perfectly good facial can be ruined by too much or too little communication. no matter which one you prefer your specialist will likely be happy to oblige - as long as you tell them.

i'm serious about wanting us all to visit the spa as much as possible this year, beauties. i've already had 3 massages since the start of 2011! with the number of deals on the web right now there is no shortage of cheap spa breaks -- so get relaxed, beauties!

lemony snicket: all the best of citrus.

in recent seasons lemony fresh scents have been considered passe, in favor of more exotic scents, but this spring welcomes the return of citrus. three of my favorite citrus finds that have found a home in my shower and my heart:

1. mario badescu orange cleansing soap - this mild cream cleanser is perfect for my friable winter skin. this is currently my go-to face wash for am and pm -- it's so gentle that it cannot be overused. 8 ounces for $12.

2. sanitas lemon cream cleanser - with it's fine gritty texture, it's more of an exfoliatant. this is the twice a week brighten up treatment that's essential all year 'round, but in spring becomes vital. $29.

3. crabtree & evelyn citron, honey & coriander shower gel - this scent reminds me of the lemon cough drops i used to have as a child, but since i would request them when i was *not* sick, i have a positive association with it. $20.

lash doctor lora condon authors new book: spa wars.

there's nothing not to love about esthetician lora condon, aka the lash doctor:

  • she will come to your house to do your lashes (if you are in the ny/nj area). i got to lie down on my own bed while my latest set of lash extensions.
  • she knows how to listen -- i told her a had a penchant for the glamorous and she added a few hot pink lashes to my outer corners -- it's just enough.
  • she knows how to dish - she i chatted about jersey shore and the beauty industry for my whole appointment. normally i like to zone out during beauty treatments, but her blunt candor makes her a refreshing delight-- which is why i'm looking forward to her new book, spa wars: the ugly truth about the beauty industry. lora has taken her 15 years of esthetician experience to the pen. i read an excerpt where she spells out what the do's and don'ts of prepping of a bikini wax. hint: don't try to hide your period from your esthetician, she knows. she always knows.
spa wars: the ugly truth about the beauty industry is currently available at amazon.com.
