those of you who really know me, know that i hate doing my hair. i'll leave the house with a full face of makeup and my hair, unbrushed, in a wet knot on top of my head.

last night i found myself chatting with frank guyton, makeup artist for sharon dorram color at sally hershberger salon on the upper east side, about summer makeup trends.

i love devon aoki - she's one of those off the radar celebs who always looks just plain elegant and slammin'. everytime i see a picture of her i end up studying it.
last week devon was spotted at the wildlife conservation society gala 2010: flights of fancy with a gorgeous faceful of lancome makeup applied by artist jordy poon. to save you the effort of scrutinizing her look, i found out what products were used to create devon's bronzed summer perfection:
does light + dark = medium? ah, the age old question.
as many regular readers know i typically mix clairol perfect 10 light auburn and dark auburn to create my signature redhead shade (to see the steps involved click here). but now there's a new perfect 10 shade on the market - medium auburn. curious, it seems like the kind of thing that could save me some time, doesn't it? last week i put it to the test, and i have to say, while the medium shade isn't quite the same as my custom blend of light and dark auburn, it's a rich vibrant red that i think i'll be mixing into my color rotation. perhaps rotating between that and my usual routine for every other dye job?

yesterday she and i headed to sephora -flip video in hadn - to test drive her makeup look for the big day. mara wanted flawless skin (she ended up buying a temptu!), with a more dramatic/vintage look on eyes and lips.
sharon, our sephora makeup artist, designed mara's look based on these specifications. she ended up with a brown smoky eye and a glossy raspberry lip. the video shows mara applying her eye makeup to her 2nd eye, under sharon's guidance. mara masters the look and i know she will be a beautiful bride!

it's officially june, and officially time to start faking it 'til you make it, tanning-wise.
i, like most women who value not looking like a hot mess, am verrry picky about self tanner for my face, because when it goes wrong it goes so wrong. this year i've chosen lancome flash bronzer oil-free tinted self-tanning face lotion as my exclusive "get glowing" plan. i've been using it every other morning and find it to be: a. non-streaky b. subtle c. working d. smells like jasmine - they claim it and it's true. so much better than the usual self-tanning smell.
recommended use is 2-3 times a week - something i think is totally doable.
