maybelline's newest mascara - the falsies - will come drugstore near you this july - but only if i don't buy every single tube first.
i received a preview tube of the falsies - and i'm totally smitten. i try to avoid saying things like this, but their is now way around it: this is the best mascara i've ever owned. if you're looking for a dramatic and reasonably priced mascara, look no further.
the falsies is meant to give you the look of false lashes - but i think it looks better than falsies. the volume and curl is divine, the lashes stay totally separated (none of the clumps that drugstore mascaras are notorious for) and they have a wet/shiny appearance - which i believe comes from pro-keratin fiber enriched formula.
now you just have a month of waiting until you can discover the falsies for yourself. the shades: blackest black, very black, brownish black, very black (waterproof), brownish black (waterproof) the numbers: $7.77, hitting shelves july 2010.

it may not sound like something you're proud to own, but when a friend asked me for the name of best medium coverage foundation i'd tried in the last few months, the answer was clinique acne solutions, hands down. and believe me, i try a lot of foundation.
foundation and acne always seem to create a vicious cycle -- too much of one is always leading you to the other. this is the first makeup i've tried with a decent coverage that also fights acne in the process -- plus it comes in formulas based on your skin type - dry combination, oily, or very oily. as a dry combination girl, i appreciate that because getting zits doesn't mean i need my face totally matted out.
lately i'm enchanted by the scent of sea salt -- nothing reminds me more of beautiful, long days spent lingering on the beach quite like a natural sea salt exfoliator, plus it gives a great glow to skin. here's the two that are currently topping my list:
lush ocean salt can be used for face and body (major plus) - it's a mix of large and small grain sea salt coupled with lime, grapefruit infused-vodka, and coconut, just be sure you don't end up eating it. $34.95 at lushusa.com.
your (my) girl mara's back - this time with a dessert and body wash pairing suggestion!
A Delicious Summer Treat: Peach Whipped Sweetie Pie Souffle
Ingredients:
2 lbs fresh peaches
pinch of salt
1 1/4 cups sugar
2 cups cold heavy cream
Combine half the peaches in saucepan with salt, 3/4 cup sugar, and 2 tablespoons water. Bring to boil over medium heat, then lower heat. Simmer until sauce thickens. Cool completely. Whip heavy cream with remaining sugar until soft peaks form. Mash the remaining uncooked peaches. Fold the cooked, cooled peaches into the cream and stir just enough to create a marbled effect. Chill in the fridge three hours before serving.
Pairs well with: mouth-wateringly smooth, deliciously-scented legs. Ingredients:
Caress Whipped Souffle Body Wash in white peach cream ($4.49, drug stores)
even though hard candy has moved their brand out of sephora and into walmart, they are finally getting back to their roots.
hard candy was the first company to design a good glitter liner - nice color payout, perfect amount of shimmer and low smudging - and now the line has reintroduced 5 shades of glitter eyeliner:
submarine (blue with silver and blue glitter)
roller derby (pink with silver and pink glitter)
money (green with silver and green glitter)
truffle (brown with gold glitter)
abyss (black with silver glitter)
when hard candy was in sephora they used to make a beautiful green glitter liner called pickle (that i would buy 2 at a time) - and guess what? that's money - same liner, new packaging and name. i'm so happy to have it back -- and for cheaper.
they have also introduced a set of highly metallic liners. molten metal eyeliner, as they are aptly named, also comes in 5 shades:
sailor (metallic blue)
camo (metallic green)
luxe (metallic purple)
24K (gold)
bullet (silver)
both new color collections come from hard candy's take me out liners are sold exclusively at walmart for around $5 each, from what i can see on the website - though these new shades are not currently listed on walmart.com.

the sephora family just keeps growing - as of may 2010 they now offer prestige baby skincare.
lavanila, orginally known for their natural body butter, just introduced their healthy baby collection. the line is made up of 100% natural products for babies and toddlers - including baby wash, lotion, bottom cream, sunscreen, and body butter. oh, and even though it contains no talc, it has that yummy hint-of-baby-powder smell that makes baby products so coveted by adults.

l'oreal true match roller brings a novel application method to the world of foundation: the paint roller.
all you do (or all i've been doing) is roll the brush in the product then treat your face like a wall in need of a new paint coat. the formula is creamy + non-cakey and gives a beautiful medium-to-heavy coverage. the only catch? running this roller all over my face, then into the product and back again doesn't feel like the best method germ control.
while the new application method is fun, like so many fun things, it doesn't seem that wise. my plan is to ditch the brush and keep the formula.
the numbers:12 shades, spf 25, approximately $14.99.

dove visibly smooth now has a few different versions and while the clinical strength held up during the exercise challenge - but my favorite deodorant of all time is still the ultimate visibly smooth in wild rose. but i think it's safe to say that one of my friend's is totally converted to the clinical strength version -- this is what she emailed me the next day:
"so.... I used the dove deodorant yesterday. worked great, better than the other stuff I was using. but what's more interesting is that my new dude, A***, told me last night that I smelled really good. All I had on was the dove deodorant! no perfume. he could smell the rosiness. he said it again, too. it lasted all night. good stuff. it's maybe the girl equivalent to that man-smell deodorant all boys use (old spice?).
thanks, Dove! (wink!)"

tokidoki, sephora's newest offering, is a makeup line inspired by the tokidoki universe of italian artist simone legno, has hit the shelves of sephoras nationwide (and sephora.com), as of may 2010. the line has a punky, youthful feel - similar to that of urban decay - and perhaps filling the niche left by hard candy's 2009 exit from sephora shelves.
tokidoki includes an impressive array of products for face, eyes, lips and even makeup tools, but where the line stands out is in it's eyeliner offerings. as a craver of glitter liners, their brillante glitter eyeliner delights me: 15 rainbow-spanning color varieties infused with either silver or gold glitter - $14 a pop. their other knockout product is the perfecto eyeliner - a liquid pen that stays put for hours - and again comes in a playful bevi of 8 colors (shown below) - for $16 apiece.
all i can say is, tokidoki, artichoki!

beauties, i'm back! and i'm welcoming you in the traditional barcelona manner, with a picture of the fish available in the local market of the small town i was staying in.
and as much as i love the mediterranean, i am a nyc girl thru-and-thru! the sophisticated style and beauty of european women remains as much a mystery to me as it ever was, though i did visit one of the world's oldest apothocaries - la galeria de santa maria novella - in barcelona. i picked up one of their talc powders with a peony scent, which i'm hoping will infuse me with that spanish air of mystery.
ps - if you are eagerly checking to see if you are one of the winners of my axe giveaway - fear not - the winners will be up within the next hour. i'm still adjusting to this new york state of time.
