affordable faux lashes keep getting more creative.
kiss' new ienvy line features more lush lashes. my favorite among the new collection is the vegas strip. the vegas strip has three different textures of lashes that you can cut to your desired length. tip: alternating the more furry lashes with the wispy ones for an enticing look.
if i didn't have lash extensions i would be going through a package of these a week. $5.99 at your local pharmacy.

after two weeks of awful beauty experiences at some of my manhattan haunts - i needed a break and a haircut. so i took a leisurely L train ride to williamsburg (only one stop outside of manhattan) to visit self salon where stylist maria basca, previously at oscar blandi, now reigns as queen.
self salon and maria could not have been more welcoming. there was no criticism of my last hair dresser (how many times have you heard, "tell me something, honey, who has been cutting your hair like this?!"), no pressure to buy everything that touched my head, and even though all of the sylists have manhattan-sized talent, there were no manhattan-sized prices (women's cuts run a very reasonable $65-75).
maria gave me her signature "dry cut", shaping up my layers and adjusting them to show off my cheekbones. then she shampooed and gave me a blow-out worthy of a nite on the town. it was the most relaxing beauty treatment i've had in months - i left refreshed rather than exhausted.
in addition to their already reasonable prices they are currently running a 20% off special. so do yourself a post-work favor, and take the L in the brooklyn direction, you won't be disappointed. visit them online at selfsalonbrooklyn.com or call 718.599.1449.

damn, MAC is fast.
their trend f/w '09 collection features the hottest fall trends from the runway, including a shimmer-free bright coral lipstick that it is pretty close to lancome's not-yet-released backstage trend lipstick, chris & tell!
MAC's red full-stop is described as bright neon coral, and is definitely a bit more bold than the lancome shade.
i'm not playing favorites this week - i love both lipsticks. if you're on the wait list for chris & tell but want a coral kisser sooner, red full-stop is $14 at maccosmetics.com.

i didn't want to like very hollywood, michael kors new fragrance. it seems too contrived -- a scent inspired by old hollywood beauty.
but, it won me over for one simple reason: the scent is infectiously happy. i can't help but be a good mood when i apply it. somewhere at the intersection of mandarin, gardenia and bergamot, i get ecstatic. and happiness is catching. people keep telling me i smell good and bursting into wide grins.
$45 for the ounce bottle at www.michaelkors.com.

while the saying goes "no pain, no gain", i call shannigans.
plucking my eyebrows, or worse -- having someone else pluck my brows, is always one of the most painful things i go through in the name of beauty. but last week when i visited eyebrow guru, ramy, and i barely felt a thing!
part of it was his quick and experienced touch, but a big part of my painless experience was the ramy tweezer he designed with tweezerman. the ramy tweezer has no sharp points, just a slanted, rounded tip the grabs little hairs and not your skin.
a wise investment for any diy brow girl, $25 at ramybeautytherapy.com.

hi beauties!
monday afternoon i hit up the cvs pharmacy suite at the robert verdi luxe laboratory. i got a quickie manicure with sally hansen polish - and while i don't love the color i chose (it's sort of an iridescent butter color), the manicure has held up beautifully. four days without chips is good by me.
while there i caught up with my dear friend glambr, and apparently just missed my less dear friends heidi montag and stephanie pratt - who was planning to stop by the suite just a few hours later. ah, fashion week.

sephora's daily brush cleaner is a genius idea.
all you have to do is spray a couple times and quickly wipe your brushes each day right after use to prevent product and bacteria build-up. but like communism, this idea only works for me in theory. i'm in such a rush in the morning that even the extra two minutes it would take to complete this extra step winds up being impossible for me.
if you have time to spare in the morning, $14 at sephora.com.

last friday i headed over to completely bare to try out their latest bikini wax, the "ur dream wax".
this new waxing treatment is designed to distract clients from the unpleasant sensory aspects of bikini waxing. the wax itself is made from a proprietary ingredient that evokes positive memories from childhood - some people say it smells like "bubblegum", others say "grape candy". next, white noise headphones are applied, so that clients no longer hear that grimace-worthy sound. finally, two types of wax are used, to help get you as hairless as you dare to be.
my thoughts? you can sugar-coat it all you want, but the bottom line is someone is still ripping hot wax off of a very sensitive area, and that hurts! the white noise headphones did help to distract me, and i appreciated that the team at completely bare didn't rush me and let me get comfortable before letting it rip. i could see this treatment being great for someone who is new to waxing and anxious about the process, especially a bride-to-be!
the wax follows the same pricing guidelines as their traditional wax (see here), just be sure to specify that you would like the "ur dream wax" when booking. currently only offered at their downtown locations.

for all you mineral makeup girls out there, i have to be honest with you, mineral makeup just really isn't my thing. but, clinique's superbalanced powder makeup spf 15 is helping me come around to it.
the worst thing about mineral makeup, in my opinion, is that it makes a mess. the loose powder spills once, and you are finding it between your bathroom tiles for months. gross.
clinique's superbalanced powder makeup is clever because you shave off the amount you want to use (by twisting the lid) just prior to using it, leaving the rest still solid and unable to make a mess. plus, it still has all those mineral makeup benefits that so many of you are wild for.
$32.50 at clinique.com and clinique counters.
