it's finally happened -- nails trends have completely dichotomized.
this fall it's either matte or intensely sparkly - there is no in between. from the colors in their anniversary set ($35 for the 3 colors), we can see that lippmann collection has embraced the latter.
lippmann collection 10th anniversary set consists of:
- ruby red slippers - dorothy's shimmering ruby (and favorite of lady gaga's)
- funky chunky - sequined sheer black
- super star - show-stopping copper flecked fudge
bonus: in honor of their anniversary, tomorrow (september 1st 2009) they are giving every 10th customer on their website ( lippmanncollection.com) a $50 gift certificate! if you are more of a glitter girl than a matte one, tomorrow's your day to stock up, beauties.

it's back to school week!
and though i no longer go back-to-school, this week still fills me with major shopping lust and an over-enthusiasm for beauty and fashion resolutions (this year i will not be seen with chipped nail polish!).
to celebrate back to school week mLm is featuring beauty products i've tried over the summer that have a back-to-school twist. emerginC protocell's key ingredient? the apple! this day or nite cream will have you looking like snow white - it is is filled with organic swiss apples and french cider apples - both of which are antioxidant and anti-aging. i use it during the day because it's hydrating without being overly rich.
so, forget your teacher this year and bring yourself an apple a day. $90 a jar, visit emerginC.com for further product info.

jo malone's newest scent is vanilla & anise. seems like my passion for the licorice scent is catching on...
this fall perfume is made from the vanilla orchid of madagascar and wild fennel flower as well as star anise for that licorice undertone. if anise seems a bit risky for you, take heart, the dominant scent is the comforting and familiar vanilla, with just a spicy hint at the end.
here's how it breaks down:
top notes: sicilian bergamot, tunisian neroli, wild fennel flower, star anise middle notes: oleander, tuberose, frangipani, purple vanilla orchid base notes: madagascar clove, white amber, vetiver bourbon, vanilla bourbon absolute, tonka
30 mL $55, 100 mL $100, at jomalone.com, jo malone shops, bergdorf goodman and select neiman marcus and saks 5th avenue stores.

the fall colors that celeb nail artist jin soon choi and MAC created for fall 2009, nail trend, are finally up on maccosmetics.com.
in a poll last month on mLm the majority of you said that beyond jealous, a blackened blue green would be the color this fall.
to be reminded of the details of the collaboration, click here. to shop the collection, click here. to see Q&A about the collaboration with jin soon herself, scroll down.

Q: M·A·C and Jin Soon – it feels like such a natural match for your first-ever brand collaboration. How did the collaboration come about?
A: It was important to me to partner with a brand that embraced bold trend-driven colours and had a strong tie to fashion – and M·A·C is all about that. From the beginning with M·A·C, everything flowed naturally, and there was a real connection in the development of this collection. As soon as we started working together, I was able to unleash my vision and really express myself through these fashion-forward colours. M·A·C really got the direction I was going in and encouraged me throughout the whole process.
Q: Mission accomplished with these colours – what helped inspire the range?
A: My husband is an architect, and I am constantly drawing inspiration and colour ideas from his creations. I also have tons of exposure to fashion trends through my work at the fashion shows and on magazine shoots. I wanted to create colours that were not only incredibly fashion-forward and edgy, with an editorial feel to them but also were totally wearable for the everyday women. I love all of the colours but am especially excited about the green hues: Dry Martini and Beyond Jealous. I think come Fall ‘09, green is going to be THE colour.
Q: Beyond Jealous is the green shade we saw on the models nails at the Doo.Ri Fall/Winter 2009 show?
A: Yes, straight from the runway. Doo.Ri wanted a strong, tough look to go with her collection so that’s how we chose the colour. The green on the nails made a strong statement and was the perfect compliment to her collection. It looked beautiful.

confession: i've been watching sex and the city reruns on tbs.
moreover, i've been seeing beauty product commercials during said reruns. i'm sure i don't have to tell you this, but commercials can be so persuasive! and this is how i ended up trying nivea sun-kissed beautiful legs - which promises to minimize shaving and gradually tan the legs - oh!, and, of course, moisturize.
it does two out of the three well - it does moisturize, and amazingly, it does seem to reduce my need to shave. and it did gradually tan my legs, but the color seemed a little unnatural, kind of like if i stained my legs with tea. but it may just be me, because i asked the boy if my legs looked weird, and he said, "they look tan, if that's what you mean", which i believe is what i was going for.
nivea sun-kissed beautiful legs is $8.05 at amazon.com.

lash extensions, i've always wanted them, and now i've got 'em!
(and yes, i'm scared of this picture of me too, but it's the only one of ten that came out right...)
top 3 pros:
- number one is definitely the fact that i look extra pretty and rested, and no one can seem to quite put their finger on why! - and all that, when i first wake up,without having to apply any makeup. - plus, my lashes never look this long or natural even with mascara.
top 3 cons:
- i have to sleep like the girl in the beginning of the movie friday, waking myself up every two seconds to make sure i'm not crushing my lashes. - it took two hours (!!!) to apply them. - the price - i got mine for $85 +tip +tip for the person who massaged my hands during the application --- and that was a bargain by lash extension standards.

where i went:
wink eyelash extensions. they are currently running a special (when you mention their ad in a.m. new york), a full set of lashes that typically costs $130 is only $85 (but bring cash). the place is clean and comfy. bonus: you get to relax in little pink beds while your lashes are applied.
visit them online at winkeyelash.com

hard candy was one of my very first makeup fixations (the nail polishes with plastic rings were featured in seventeen. it was love at first site). their eyeshadow quads and glitter liners soon became must-haves of mine as well.
lately, they've been MIA. their website currently says "under construction", but the official word is out, the brand has gone mass and will be hitting walmart's shelves this september. the new hard candy pieces will retail for less than $10 a piece!
take me out liner swatch array to view the new shades i've seen the whole collection (above are some pictures to get you acquainted). my first impressions? while the line retains it's fun, free spirit, all of the items are new. so don't expect to see your old favorites. skip: walk the liner liquid liner - the formula is too runny. grab: take me out liner (pictured above) - color payoff is great, they are extra cute because they are designed to look like chopsticks, and they go on smoothly. buy out their stock of: blush crush - this baked blush comes in four colors with amazing sheen.

nothing is worse than a sweet scent on a hot day (ok, i can think of a few things that are worse, but still, let's just agree that sweet and sticky equals gross).
molton brown's black pepper line offers a nice counterbalance to the 90 degree weather - not at all sweet and not too spicy - fully refreshing. the scent is unisex and molton brown claims it's an aphrodisiac. while i haven't experienced this effect yet, i will say the scent is pretty sexy.
bonus: this september 2009 they are adding to the line with the molton brown re-charge black pepper bodyscrub bar. the bar is infused with cracked peppercorns -- be on the lookout for it, beauties!

why, la mer, why?! just as i've found a lot of concealers i really like, you have to go and be the best - and obviously, the most expensive ($65).
la mer's radiant concealer spf 25 not only covers my dark circles and blemishes, but makes me look like i have the skin of a goddess. and lately, i've had a lot to hide, so that's saying something. the formula is infused with gemstones - tourmaline and malchite - for that extra oomph. it's easy to use, buildable, and comes with it's own perfect brush. goodbye $65, hello pretty skin.

i'm a strong believer that eating right is good for one's beauty quotient. i'm also a strong believer is desserts. hence, my penchant for things like borba gummi bears, and now viactiv calcium soft chews.

i love vitamins, but i love them more when they taste good and are easy to swallow. viactiv soft chews are full of calcium and vitamin D, which may not sound all that glam now, but i'm pretty sure healthy bones are one of the key hotness players when one's in their 80s. and i don't know about you, beauties, but i have every intention of being hot in the nursing home.
they come in four flavors; chocolate mink, milk chocolate, caramel, and raspberry. but you just gotta trust me on this, because i've tried them all: caramel is the way to go.
true story: my mom had the caramel flavored chews when i was in high school and one of my guy friends finished the box without looking it. the next morning i told my mom that he had finished them. she laughed and said, "that's totally fine, but those are women's supplements." he didn't even know - and he thought they tasted awesome! viactiv soft chews are found in the vitamin aisle at food and drug stores around $7 for a box of 60 and $10 for a box of 90.

my hair's been taking shots. just last thursday it downed a "clear moisture" and a "color extend".
redken's chemistry is an in-salon service that provides customized moisturizing treatment.
first there's the "shot phase", which can be one or any combination of the following, depending on what the stylist feels your hair is in need of:
- clear moisture - for normal/dry hair
- extreme - for distressed hair
- color extend - for color-treated hair
- all-soft - for dry, brittle hair
- smooth down - for very dry/fizzy hair
- real control - for dense, dry, sensitized hair
after letting the shot set in, you reach the " shot phix phase", which comes in two, more cryptic varietals: - 3.5 - for chemically treated hair
- 5.5 - for slightly damaged/less processed hair
then, comes a bangin' blowout. my blowout looked amazing for the next two days - it was touchably smooth and my color was extra radiant. the whole treatment, depending on the salon usually runs around $35. tip: get the treatment the morning of a special occasion, then you have the perfectly coiffed look of "salon hair" for your event, and the benefits of the treatment for weeks to come. look up salons offering redken chemistry (indicated by a yellow "C" next to their name) here.

the straight up confusing thing about the matte nail trend is how your supposed to keep your nails shine-free once you apply topcoat.
you can make the polish formula as matte as you want, but the second you finish it off, it will turn shinyville. my friend emily actually pointed this out to me when we were discussing fall's matte polishes on the l.i.r.r. back from long beach, and at the time, i was left speechless.
well, now, thanks to essie i have a response: matte about you. essie's matte about you is a smooth matte finish that not only protects your matte polishes, but can be put atop of your shiny polishes to give a matte finish! if you're not looking to get a whole new polish-robe this fall, this is the way to go - just use the colors you already love and turn them matte. brilliant, no?
$10 at essie.com.

bringing a playful dose of drama, illamasqua is sephora's newest u.k. import (see also, lauren luke).
though still a british baby (the brand is less than a year old), illamasqua has crossed the pond. it is currently being sold in the u.s. exclusively at the new sephora at times square and sephora.com.
the brand boasts a full collection of innovative false lashes, intense lipgloss in the hottest of pinks and corals, and nail varnishes in shades so bright their past lives must have been in the '80s (see rare, their neon yellow, for a visual aid). they also have a product called liquid metal which comes in two shades - enrapture (metallic copper) and solstice (metallic gold) that looks as though it alone warrants a trip to times square.

beauties, a couple weeks ago i mentioned that because of my beauty writer status, people are always spying around in my bathroom (reminisce about that here).
well, i sometimes get dandruff and the only thing cures it is head & shoulders. and while i love h&s for saving me the embarrassment of making it snow in july, i'd prefer if everyone did not see their bottles lying around my shower.
enter: the simple human soap and shampoo dispensers. about a week ago i ordered these wall mounts so i could hide my less-than-glamorous dandruff shampoo in these austere shells. so far? great success. i was most concerned about putting together the dispensers and mounting them to the wall -- but the directions had big writing and pictures, so i was able to do it all by myself!
now when you look in my shower it's just a sea of beautiful redken bottles, with an innocuous dispenser on the wall. $49.99 for the twin bottle dispenser at simplehuman.com.

beauties, here are my friend liz's calgel nails (and engagement ring!). she has a light pink base, silver glitter gradation, and 2-3 rhinestones on each finger. and below is her smiling, newly engaged face. doesn't she look gorgeous?!

beauties, it's been a whirlwind of a weekend.
inspired by MAC publicist extraordinaire, heather park (click on her name to check out her blog and fantastical nails), i went with my dear friend liz to get calgel nails at sakura nail spa.
the details: sakura is the only place in nyc to get calgel nails, which are popular in japan. the treatment took about two hours, but is supposed to last about two weeks, and ran me about $65 (it's $40 for the basic, but i had to be all extra about it). it's similar to, but can be much more ornate than, the gelife nails at dashing diva. my nails are white with purple glitter gradation tips, then covered in red rhinestones and pearls on the ring fingers. i love my hands.
after the manicure, i dashed to atlantic city, where my poker skills may not have been up to snuff, but my hands received more compliments then ever before. but liz's hands served her even better -- i came back to learn her bejeweled calgel fingers got some extra bling - she got engaged friday nite! expect pictures of her nails and hand with ring later today.
remember when mara got her nails done with me and also got engaged? moral of the story: come to the salon with me if you want to have a ring put on it.
