i love me some kimora lee simmons and baby phat - going backstage at baby phat is an opportunity i never pass up. and for fall 2009 the look-spiration was our first lady, michelle obama.
as always, backstage at baby phat is like no other show -- hair genius odile gibert puffs on cigs as she styles away. when i asked what the plan for hair was odile replied, "shoulder-length. except for the short-haired girls, we're keeping them short. then, it's curl, tease, the whole number! and lots of that l'oreal spray." this could mean any number of products, but what's clear is that it's a product with lots of hold.
over in makeup james kaliardos of MAC told me the look would be "classic, but with a little glitter still. it's still baby phat." the face was contoured, individual false lashes set in place, and cheeks were brightened with a mix of pink swoon and peaches. darker models received full fuschia on their apples. eyeshadow was drizzle gold with bronze glitter. finally, lips were coated in partial to pink cremesheen glass.
and of course, the nails were done by CND. the long round tips were a soft golden brown, meant to look like satin ribbon. iced cappacino polish was layered with gold chrome (for fall 2009) on top - one coat of each.
and that's baby phat for you.

beauties, i don't know if it was leftover fashion week stress or what, but my shoulders were so knotted up last nite they seemed to be up to my ears. so i did something i only usually do in florida...
i took a bath!
i had just gotten a box of beau bain bath bombs, one of which was called rainbow sherbet and it sort of looked like a scoop of rainbow sherbet. which, to me, is the definition of a tempting item. i dropped it in some very hot water and was immediately delighted by it's intense fizzing and the soft citrus/cream smell that filled the room.
once i got into the tub, i knew this was a well-made bath bomb because my skin softened up in no time (includes dead sea salts, clays and essential oils ). another thing about these beau bain bath bombs is that they look beautiful together, so their collections - fruit, floral, icecream and lavender may be the best purchase because the unused ones make for a beautiful bathroom display.
each bomb itself is $8, a collection of 4 is $29 at beaubain.com.

as promised, here's my re-creation of the look from the chris benz presentation.
i used all of the lancome products listed here, with two exceptions. i subbed a MAC black paintpot for the not-yet-released creme liner in indigo and i used MAC viva glam IV on my lips because i do not own the prescribed lancome lipstick.
i wore the look out friday nite and it seemed to be a crowd pleaser. what do you think?

beauties, i just got off the phone with celebrity makeup artist, bruce grayson, who worked the oscars last nite.
bruce styled goldie hawn, whoopi goldberg, and several of the men in attendance (hd tv means everyone needs a little help!). i asked him a few questions to help you learn more about some of the nite's looks:
- what are three must-haves for looking gorgeous on the red carpet?
- great skin, beforehand- great concealer/great foundation - great lashes -- "lashes are the key big eyes. it's no longer about using a lot of liner or shadow to create a big eye. there's so much more simplicity in opening the eye up with big lashes. - what product did you use most on celebrities?
- olay definity color recapture - "i use products i know will work and blend fast." - what trends did you see in the makeup last nite?
-"the oscars is about simplicity - the focus will be on eyes, lips, or brows. maybe 2, but not all 3. and translucency in makeup is here to stay. all sheer with skin showing through. sure, you cover blotchiness, redness, but you can still see their skin." - which trends did you see carrying over from last week's runway shows?
- " lip color. but sheer, bright color, like MAC's new cremesheen glass. it has more coverage than gloss but less texture than lipstick. and defined brows - they were on the runway and they were at the oscars last nite." - who was your favorite look of the nite:
- "jennifer aniston - she normally looks natural, clean, but she pumped it up with those stained cheeks. she looked healthy and fashion-y! and her skin was radiant. can i just say that tina fey also looked great last nite!" - which celeb do you love working with?
-"there are so many great celebrities. i don't want to answer this question, because i don't want to get anyone mad at me! but i worked rosario dawson last week and she was so smart. she's such a great, nice woman. and so damn gorgeous!"

taylor momsen was spotted at marchesa and anna sui runway shows last week, wearing a smokin' eye. in fact, at the anna sui show she was spotted by my lovely friend, charu, who was sitting right next to me. charu ran up to her to taylor and took the photo at left. nice work, huh?
turns out nars makeup artist, sharon brown, used nars products to create taylor's sexy look. “taylor wanted a smoky, strong eye - her signature look,” said brown. “i used black moon eyeliner pencil to rim her eyes and smudge over the entire lid.” blue shadow was layered for a pop of color. finally, cyprus, a bronze shadow with shimmer, was added for a flawless transition into her next outfit. “she was wearing a beautiful dress with copper accents later that night so I wanted the look to work well into the evening.” with the eyes as the focus, the cheeks were kept soft and highlighted, and the lips were delicately glossed with a new sheer pink grapefruit shade for spring.
oh, and i thought the anna sui show was fantastical -- some models were wearing star tiaras! that's a sell for me.

vibrating mascara has been one of makeup's new "it things" for the last few months - every prestige brand is getting one. it's perfect for when you want those thick, dramatic lashes (which i so often do!), so i've embraced the trend.
prescriptives motoreyes instant action volume mascara doesn't strike me as particularly different from lancome's oscillation - both vibrate to give tons of volume and curl. since they're so similar - why choose sides? i'm a fan of both!
what does the prescriptives version have on lancome - $2. it goes for $32 rather than $34. motoreyes is only available through qvc. **update: starting april 15th it will also be available on prescriptives counters nationwide and prescriptives.com.

since my new year's resolution was to take more pictures, my camera would, of course, malfunction backstage at chris benz (which happened to also be my favorite makeup look of the week).
the inspiration for the look was "uptown girl goes downtown for the nite". all makeup was lancome, done by artist daniel martin. the makeup, specifically, was meant to look like it was a polaroid picture of said girl. therefore, skin was applied two shades lighter than the model's actual skin tone. hollows of cheeks were filled with color design blush in chic cassis and lips were nude-ified in l'absolu rouge in rich cashmere. the focus was on a black, shimmery, milky eye - created with creme liner in indigo (which will be part of the lancome fall 2009 collection!), color design in the new black and glossed over with color fever gloss in piha black. i will be re-creating this look this weekend - so look for pictures next week.
hair styled with redken products and fashioned by john ruidant. it was both absolutely adorable and totally outside of my capability level. it was a deep side part with loose curls and a lot of steps. here's what i got - apply fabricate and blowdry. side part and spray with hot sets 22. use a 1" curling iron. something with pins. finish with workforce.
nails were done by deborah lippmann (who i got to meet backstage - which was awesome because i've been obsessed with her polishes lately and got to tell her so.) using lancome's yet-unnamed fall 2009 shades. the models got either red, indigo or gold nails.

this morning i got to see some of my favorite bloggers and my new favorite human, nicolas degennes - creator of givenchy's spring/summer 2009 line - at a breakfast to celebrate the launch of the aforementioned line.
this line is all about loud color. degennes says, "i saw india as a bombardment of colours...it was the imagery that really grabbed me -- bollywood and its palettes of colours burst with beams of light."
see it all here. my early favorites? the magic kajal (intense kohl eye pencil) and precious sari (glitter eyeshadow at left).
spoiler alert: degennes spilled that the fall/winter 2009 line will be inspired by 1800th century romanticism - an interesting follow-up to an india-laced line, hrm?

beauties, the fashion week gods have smiled upon me!
i have my very own tube of MAC's ruffian red, a bright yellow-red lipstick, created by MAC and ruffian. designer and makeup line fashion week collaborations delight me!
and get this, only 500 tubes of this lipstick exist - it cannot be purchased and is only available to those who attended the show (which was on saturday, 2/14/09) and select trendsetters (is that me?!).
the shade is meant to capture the franco-american allure of ruffian's fall 2009 collection. the inspiration? a red lacquer 18th century chinese vase in the home of ruffian-friend and muse, antonia thompson. obscure, n'est-ce pas?
i haven't had a minute to put it on yet, but you can bet once i do the pictures will be here. now, its back to my tent/event-packed schedule!

the look at costello tagliapietra was a decade mix - with nods from every era from 1950 to 1990. MAC products were used to create a look that was shockingly devoid of color. inspired by pen portraits, the most notable marking was the traced black liner surrounding the eye. skin was matte, cheeks were glossed, eyebrows severe and lips a deep chocolate brown.
the hair wasn't finalized while i was backstage, but it was a big tight beehive. oh, and i caught a glimpse of the line on my way out the door - lots of solid fall colors - browns, greys and burnt orange - and cinched waists (yay!).

today is the day. the highly-anticipated, long-awaited, MAC/hello kitty collaboration is here!
and what a collaboration it is. this is a large collection. it's broken down into three categories on the MAC site - hello kitty mild, hello kitty wild and hello kitty accessories.
this collection is great for the hello kitty or MAC collector. the packaging and design is adorable. no detail work was spared. however, for the everyday makeup wearer, the colors may seem a bit garish.
if you aren't a serious collector but would like a keepsake from this unique line, i have found the lipsticks in big bow and strayin' to be very wearable, beautiful bright pinks (perfect for valentine's day lips)! and i love that the little hello kitty face branded into the lipstick.

looking to save some money on your hair removal rituals?
i'm not about to ask you to give yourself a swarovski crystal bikini wax, but a lot of hair removal can be done cheaply and effectively at home. if you're riding the recession pony this valentine's day, allow me to introduce you to my favorite find for such occasions, nair's precision face & upper lip kit.
removing little hairs from your upper lip does not require expertise, because you shouldn't be shaping it, so much as just getting rid of any and all of it. just apply the cream where you see hair, wait 5 minutes for the hair to melt away, then rinse and act like nothing happened.
$4.99, and hitting shelves shortly!

rose & honey shea souffle is the body lotion that will get me through the rest of winter.
my first thought was rose and honey? how sickly sweet is this going to make me smell? luckily, the dominant scent is soothing shea butter, mixed with hints of rose, honey, almond, banana and (my absolute favorite scent) anise. the result is a subtle scent that i can't get enough of -- i've actually opened the jar twice in the last hour just to smell it.
as for the moisturizing factor - it packs in the hydration. it doesn't go on thick, but it's rich enough that it gives my skin a non-sparkly glow, a happy balance.
the only minus? the carol's daughter website says something about it being "limited edition", so jump on roses & honey shea souffle before it goes the way of unicorns and dinosaurs. $20 at carolsdaughter.com.

the oldest question in beauty is, and always will be, is there a drugstore anti-aging regime that works at well as a $300 cream?
well, olay's newest line, olay professional pro-x has done the studies and proved that it's not only as effective in reducing and preventing wrinkles as the most expensive creams on the market, it rivals the prescription stuff. in 28 days, the wrinkles of participants in a clinical trial were measurably smaller.
the line is unarguably more expensive than a typical drugstore line - with most products at the $41 dollar mark, but when you compare that to a cream that is well over $100 -- the choice is clear. if you want to dip a toe before jumping in the pool, i recommend the $61.50 starter kit to see if this line is a match for you.
i've been playing around with the line myself, and well it doesn't have the luxorious smell of my favorite exorbitantly priced creams, it is a formible moisturizer, and i'm hoping, wrinkle preventer.
the line includes age repair lotion with spf 30, wrinkle smoothing cream, hydra firming cream, deep wrinkle treatment, eye restoration complex, and discoloration fighting concentrate. available at target.com.
