essie's spring 2009 lacquer line is taking it's cues from the runway.
picking up on the colors seen in the fabrics, essie has created a line with bright reds, dusty pinks and even a bold blue. the above picture is from the gucci spring 2009 collection. even though i would look like a clown in them, i sorta want those pants. and i definitely want those shoes.
essie weingarten, president and founder of essie cosmetics says, "this was a season of classic hues." and i can't help but notice, like the trends of the last few spring lines, quite nautical!

shades:
- lacquered up - red hot crimson
- flawless - cherry blossom pink
- eternal optimist - spiced tea rose
- mesmerize - royal va-va blue
- one of a kind - poppy red kiss
- status symbol - feisty hot pink
i think one of a kind will be my favorite - i've said it before and i'll say it again - if you want to sell me a cheek, nail or lip color, describe it as poppy and consider it in the bag. the collection is now available at essie.com for $8 a bottle.

i am, once again, using the spring collections to keep me warm.
urban decay's new spring colors remind me of a caribbean rainforest (spring break here i come!). i'm particularly loving the new heavy metal glitter eyeliner shades. i've been rocking midnight cowboy for the last couple days and it's brought the twinkle back to my eye (or at least the area surrounding it).
this look definitely isn't for your next job interview, but it is the perfect way to add color to your next chilly nite out.

- eyesahdow duo in egea (frosted sage and smoky lilac)
- single eyeshadow in baby girl (cotton candy with golden undertones and gold particles)
- duo concealer in vanilla/honey (for fair complexions)

i used to have a bright white phone, which is a great way to announce to people how into makeup you are, because they see it smeared all over your phone.
now that i have a black phone, i still find smears of shimmer and blush stains on its face from being pressed against my cheek. i'm also convinced that this lingering makeup leads to breakouts.
about a month ago i got the surface portable device screen cleaning pads. you just stick the pad on the back of your phone, chat away, then un-stick it to wipe the screen, and it easily re-sticks on the back. "makeup phone" problem solved.
$9.99 for a pack of 3 at http://surface-clean.com.

lancome's spring 2009 collection is here -and it's all pink and black, but not in a ballet way. thus, it is aptly named, pink irreverence.
the collection is inspired by the shiny black sand of aaron de mey (lancome's new creative director)'s native new zealand. and the pink is a nod to lancome's signature symbol, the rose.
the things in this collection i'm all over:
nail polish - le vernis in sassiness and piha black lipcolor - la laque fever in electric pink

last nite i went to an event all about how to be a frugalista (stylish beauty who makes economy-wise beauty choices), and unbeknown to me (or believe me, i would've worn a better outfit), stacy london from "what not to wear" was the guest of honor.
i got the chance to chat with stacy in and an intimate group and get some beauty and style advice for 2009 from her:
1. on how effective and inexpensive pantene shampoo, conditioner and styling products: "the economy doesn't really matter to me. having good hair does. and both pantene you get an amazing product that happens to be at a great price."
2. stacy recommends saving some money on fun shoes and going for something by jeffrey campbell, oh! deer or seychelle's (all favorites of mine as well!).
3. she predicts costume jewelry is about to come back, big time. and brooches. lots of talk about brooches.
4. the wet seal skinny jeans in black are $19.99, and she thinks they're amazing. i can't find them on the website, but get on that.

new year, new skin.
i re-discovered the joy of exfoliation at the end of 2008. having a ritual to exfoliate face and body at least twice a week makes the difference between winter-dull vs. glowing skin. here are the best exfoliators i've found - one for face and one for body.
face: i used to think all the hype about st. ive's apricot scrub was just that. but then i had a major breakout while trapped my parent's house in florida and this was all that was on-hand. somehow this inexpensive scrub saved my face!
body: for body, i can't get enough of crabtree & evelyn's floral body smoother.
most body exfoliants have either a sugar or a salt base. this one has both salt and sugar, plus lavender buds - meaning you get three different size particles to exfoliate you - this is uber-effective. my skin is unbelievably soft after using it.
it runs $34.50, but its a pretty big jar, so it's still a good deal.
renew your skin, beauties!

brunette, blonde, redhead is up on the MAC site now! one of MAC's cleverest ideas in months. as MAC says:
Three dramatically different personalities, three perfectly personalized palettes. Eyes, cheeks, lips, formulated to be coiffure-complementary. Bombshell or bookworm, no matter. Colour-coordination this comprehensive makes it work! Designed to play-up the most potent and powerful accessory a girl has: her hair. The complete opposite of contrivance – this is simplicity itself. So basic it’s brilliant!
i love it! and to celebrate my hair coloring success of last nite, i'm all over that redhead mineralize skinfinish (gold to salmon pink degrade). UPDATE: the release date was pushed back to tomorrow (01/09/08) (thank you, phyrra for the heads up!), but i have a pre-release of the redhead mineralize skinfinish, and it is my new best friend!

i normally avoid coloring my own hair. i figure that is the sort of thing best left to the professionals - it's like washing a dry-clean only shirt at home. i just don't mess with some things. but beauties, money is tight.
last time i used clairol's perfect 10 it was in the comfort of the ted gibson salon and under the watchful eye of celebrity colorist, jason backe. and i was incredibly happy with results (see that here). but, tonite there was no salon, no celebrity stylist, just me and two boxes - light auburn and dark auburn. and i was scared.
i mixed them together, put it on my roots, waited 5 minutes, put it on the rest of my hair and my eyebrows (yes, i know i'm not supposed to do that), waited another 5 minutes, and hopped in the shower.
and after that run-on sentence, i can say that i am once again very pleased! it's fast (you actually are not even supposed to leave it in for a moment over 10 minutes), it's auburn, and it's affordable.

one of the best things about snowy days (fine, the only good thing about snowy days) is reflecting the flurries with your eye makeup, by using iridescent shadows. the look perfectly and simply complimented by black lashes.
even though the year has changed, my signatures remain the same. and iridescent shadows are now and will always be one of my favorite looks. it's unique, yet subtle. and the iridescent shadows are particularly beautiful in a winter wonderland.
i've started my new year with three great new nars' duos - iceland (icy blue & icy green), thebes (sheer platnum & sheer gold), kilimanjaro (icy blue & icy yellow). $32 a duo.

MAC's chill collection comes to down to one key player - penultimate eye liner in rapidblack ($16.50).
the pros: - like a little sharpie, you just draw your liner on. which may be better for someone who doesn't have a steady hand with a brush.
- this liner has staying power. i drew on my hand with it, then washed a sink full of dishes, and the line hadn't smudged. this is especially great because i love winged liner looks, and a lot of times i find myself with only one wing midway through the day.
the con: -like with other sharpie-style liquid liners, i find the black is a always a soft black, never a true midnight shade. this could work in it's favor, though, if you aren't going for super-dramatic.

spring collections are popping up all over the place - and they are all filled with punches of color.
i've had my first look (and chance to play with) bobbi brights, bobbi brown's colorful spring collection, this weekend.

the hit of the collection is the bobbi brights eye palette ($70), which includes mini pans of 35 matte, bright shadow shades. "the idea behind bobbi brights is simple. it's a library of beautiful bolts of color that a woman can pick up anytime she wants to add a little fun to her look," says brown.
the array of shadows are complimented by six new lip gloss compact shades and four new shades of creamy lip color. i'm totally in love with retro pink creamy lip color - it's a soft, glossy rose.
the whole collection is up at bobbibrowncosmetics.com now, so start thinking spring, beauties!

happy new year, beauties!
my resolution is: to take more pictures.
but in true form, i forgot to put the little card back in my camera for new year's eve nite and now i don't know how to get the pictures off of it. oops!
luckily, i practiced my makeup look a few nights earlier, so you can kind of see it in this picture with my beautiful friend, elaina. i did a shimmery, smoky brown eye. this is a great look for a blue-eyed girl because brown and blue are opposites on the color wheel.
what i used:
MAC's inter-view mineralize eye shadow (trio) (seen at left). i blended the brown and gold colors together and put it from my lash line into my crease.
urban decay's liquid liner in roach (warm brown). i used this to line the top of my eye and wing it out, also to cover any lash glue from the faux lashes.
hard candy's glitter eye pencil in hyper (brown with gold glitter). i lined my lower lashes with this one.
shu uemura's false eyelashes in slant black. i had been planning to wear a set of shu lashes with rhinestones, but these ended up working better with my already very glittery look.
i wish you all a prosperous and healthy new year, beauties. and i look forward to bringing you more makeup and beauty trends and reviews in 2009!
